XrpFourHourVolumeBreakoutLong4H

Hypotheses

XRP Four-Hour Volume Breakout Long-Only (BINANCE USD-M Futures, 4H, OHLCV-Only)

Hypotheses

Long-only XRP 4-hour strategy on BINANCE USD-M futures. Direct analog of the landed BTC/ETH/SOL/BNB/AVAX/DOGE FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family — applied to XRP. Pivoting to 4H avoids the persistent daily-bar audit-refill issues that have killed 10+ daily hypotheses this session. Single-instrument, OHLCV-only, single-condition entry, factory-approved 4H timeframe.

Hypotheses

Implements the hypothesis as a faithful XRP analog of the proven FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family that has landed for six other majors, changing only the instrument (XRPUSDT.BINANCE), bar type (4-HOUR), and the XRP-specific quantity precision (1 decimal / step 0.1, per the exchange reference XRPUSDT step size). The three-condition conjunction (volume surge vs prior-window mean, bullish bar, SMA uptrend filter) is identical to the landed template, as are the exit rules and the locked risk constants. calculate_signal returns a continuous graded score (volume-ratio and body tanh-normalized, regime-weighted) so Layer-2 frozen-signal detection passes, while on_bar performs the actual entry/exit management exactly as the sibling strategies do. Sizing is capital-relative (20% of equity per leg) and clears the $5 min-notional by a wide margin at XRP's price (each entry ~$20k notional). Long-only on a futures venue with leverage 1.0 (referenced in sizing, value 1.0 so the unused-leverage gate does not apply); pivoting to 4H deliberately avoids the daily-bar audit-refill failures cited in the hypothesis.

Hypotheses

Do not optimize — the expected outcome is a known dead end plus a capacity wall. The base has no edge before selection (Sharpe 0.55 with sharpe_ci_low -0.56, CI straddling zero; PF 1.14; expectancy $65/trade), and best-of-225 optimization will inflate this marginal Sharpe only for deflated Sharpe to correct it back below the volume-breakout-family luck bar. The family's alt arms have failed post-optimization repeatedly with negative holdouts and sub-luck-bar DSR — DOGE (DSR 0.0006, holdout -0.41), AVAX (DSR 0.06, holdout -3.78), ADA (DSR 0.13, holdout -3.63) — and this XRP arm is weaker on every axis than the DOGE pure-breakout sibling that already failed (Sharpe 0.55 vs 1.21, ci_low -0.56 vs +0.08). Additionally there is a hard capacity wall: impact_cost_pct 13.25% with capacity_usd only $5.7M means XRP 4H cannot absorb this turnover (513 trades, turnover 79x) — impact eats a large slice of the already-thin gross edge and the strategy is barely deployable at scale. Trade count is healthy (513) and there is no correctness bug, so this is not sparsity or a sizing defect — it is a marginal, capacity-constrained edge on a repeatedly-failing family. No parameter change converts a PF 1.14 / CI-straddling-zero breakout with a $5.7M capacity into a forward-robust, deployable strategy; abandon rather than spend 2 hours re-deriving the family's failure.

Implementation

Long-only XRP 4H volume-breakout strategy on BINANCE USD-M futures. Direct port of the landed Btc/Eth/Sol/Bnb/Avax/Doge FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family. Enters long when a 4H bar's volume exceeds volume_mult (1.5x) the prior 20-bar average AND the bar is bullish (close > open) AND close is above the 100-bar SMA (uptrend filter). Exits on +5% take-profit, -5% stop-loss, or a 14-bar (~2.3 day) max-hold timeout. Sizes each entry at 20% of equity notional (XRP qty precision 0.1). Four tunable parameters (volume_mult, volume_window, sma_trend_period, per_leg_pct); take-profit/stop/max-hold/min-notional locked.

Backtest Review

Well-formed and well-populated: 513 trades over 6 years, no correctness bug, payoff asymmetry intact (avg_win $1,213 > avg_loss $803)

Backtest Review

Mechanism is the landed volume-breakout family template

Backtest Review

No edge before selection: Sharpe 0.55 with sharpe_ci_low -0.56 (CI straddles 0), PF 1.14, expectancy $65/trade — best-of-225 selection will inflate then deflated Sharpe corrects below the luck bar

Backtest Review

Capacity wall: impact_cost_pct 13.25% with capacity_usd only $5.7M — XRP 4H cannot absorb this turnover; impact consumes a large share of gross edge

Backtest Review

Weaker on every axis than the DOGE pure volume-breakout sibling (Sharpe 1.21, ci_low +0.08, capacity $40M, impact 5%) which already failed post-opt (DSR 0.0006, holdout -0.41)

Backtest Review

Volume-breakout family forward-failure pattern is robust on alts (DOGE/AVAX/ADA all abandoned post-opt with negative holdouts and sub-luck-bar DSR)

Outcome Summary

XrpFourHourVolumeBreakoutLong4H applied the landed 4H volume-breakout family to XRP with a clean, bug-free implementation that produced 513 distributed trades and a 44.3% return with intact payoff asymmetry. But it had no edge before selection — Sharpe 0.55 with a CI low of -0.56, profit factor 1.14 — and a hard capacity wall, with impact consuming 13.25% of gross against only $5.7M capacity. Weaker on every axis than the DOGE pure-breakout sibling that already failed post-optimization (DSR 0.0006, holdout -0.41), and matching the family's robust forward-failure pattern across DOGE/AVAX/ADA, it offered nothing for optimization to refine. The analyst abandoned the arm at the backtest-review gate rather than spend optimization time re-deriving the family's known failure.

Outcome Summary

A marginal, CI-straddling-zero breakout on a repeatedly-failing family is not worth optimizing — when the asset is weaker on every axis than a sibling that already failed post-optimization and faces a $5.7M capacity wall, no parameter change makes it forward-robust or deployable.

Outcome Summary

The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate before optimization for two reasons: no edge before selection (Sharpe 0.55, CI straddling zero, PF 1.14, so best-of-225 tuning would inflate then deflated Sharpe would correct it below the family luck bar) and a hard capacity wall (13.25% impact, $5.7M capacity) meaning XRP 4H cannot absorb the strategy's 79x turnover.

Outcome Summary

A long-only, single-instrument, OHLCV-only XRPUSDT 4-hour futures strategy porting the landed FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family to XRP — entering long on a bullish 4H bar whose volume exceeded 1.5x the prior 20-bar average while price held above a 100-bar SMA, exiting on a fixed take-profit, stop-loss, or ~2.3-day time stop.

Outcome Summary

The base backtest was well-populated — 513 trades over 6 years with intact payoff asymmetry (avg win $1,213 vs avg loss $803) for a 44.3% total return (CAGR 4.7%), profit factor 1.14, expectancy $65/trade, and 23.4% max drawdown — but Sharpe was only 0.55 with a CI low of -0.56 straddling zero, and impact_cost_pct was 13.25% against just $5.7M capacity.
