DOGE Daily 30-Bar High Breakout Long with Volume Confirmation

Hypotheses

A LONG-ONLY momentum-CONFIRMATION breakout strategy on DOGEUSDT.BINANCE perpetual futures (Binance USD-M) using DAILY bars. Identical mechanism specification to the XRP 30-bar-high breakout already in pipeline — same entry triggers, same volume requirement, same exit logic, same parameters — applied to DOGE as the third instrument completing the breakout-strategy coverage across the major altcoins (ADA at 50-day, XRP at 30-day, DOGE at 30-day). DOGE is the chosen instrument because: (1) DOGE has ZERO currently-active pipeline strategies (the failed Triple Screen pullback was in the now-3x-falsified pullback class, structurally orthogonal to this momentum-confirmation strategy); (2) DOGE has 5+ years of clean Binance USD-M data (listed July 2020) with no deprecation risk; (3) DOGE is confirmed in the precision map (Binance Options supports DOGE per data infrastructure spec, and prior DOGE Triple Screen ran without precision errors); (4) DOGE has distinct meme-driven microstructure that produces episodic massive breakouts on volume (April-May 2021 +700%, October-November 2024 +250%, multiple Elon-tweet single-day +30% events) — exactly the setup this mechanism targets. Built strictly from the session's EMPIRICALLY-VALIDATED working pattern: daily bars (validated frequency, ≥25 trades/year target), momentum CONFIRMATION direction (NOT pullback — class falsified 3x; NOT counter-trend — class falsified both directions), volume-spike confirmation (working mechanism class), breakout-failure exit (lesson from LINK weekly outlier dependency), outlier-dependency abandonment rule, 2022-PnL check (the analyst-prescribed canonical bear-year sanity test). Structurally distinct from every pipeline strategy and every session-falsified mechanism. Cross-instrument parameter consistency: SAME 30-bar lookback, SAME 1.5× volume threshold, SAME 20-day max holding, SAME 20% profit target as XRP version — testing mechanism generalization across instruments, not parameter-mining a single instrument.

Hypotheses

Implements the hypothesis as the third instrument (after ADA-50d and XRP-30d) in the breakout family, reusing the empirically-validated XRP v3 mechanism unchanged: daily bars, momentum-CONFIRMATION direction (not pullback/counter-trend), 30-bar-high breakout, 1.5x volume-spike confirmation, and a breakout-failure exit (the LINK outlier-dependency lesson). Honors the hypothesis numeric spec exactly — 30-bar lookback, 1.5x volume threshold, 20-day max holding (time_stop_bars=20), 20% profit target — testing mechanism generalization rather than per-instrument parameter-mining. calculate_signal returns a continuous ATR-scaled breakout distance (varies every bar -> no frozen-signal trip); the binary breakout+volume gate lives in should_enter. DOGE chosen for zero active pipeline strategies, 5+ years clean Binance USD-M data, and episodic meme-driven volume breakouts that are exactly this mechanism's target. Kept on BINANCE USD-M perp (not spot) to preserve identical fees/venue with the XRP/ADA siblings for a valid cross-instrument consistency test.

Hypotheses

Failed every generalization gate decisively on a structurally thin sample — not fixable by iteration. Deflated Sharpe 0.0 with the optimized Sharpe 1.87 far BELOW the expected-max-under-noise bar of 5.95 (on 37 trades, a best-of-225 search finds ~6 Sharpe from pure noise), is_significant=FALSE, PBO 0.7182, sharpe_ci_low -0.12 (straddles 0). Walk-forward is_overfitted=TRUE: avg IS 2.82 collapses to avg OOS -1.545 with windows [-10.17, 2.58, 2.95] (first window catastrophic), and the holdout FAILED catastrophically (holdout_sharpe -1.92, negative). The attractive base Sharpe (2.10) was an artifact of a thin, outlier-carried sample (37 trades ~5/yr vs the hypothesis's 25/yr target; record leans on 2022-10-29 +10.4% and a few 2024 breakouts, kurtosis 43.8) — after 225-trial selection the edge INVERTS out-of-sample. NOT iterate: this is the decisive opposite of the ADA/SOL breakout/TSM siblings I iterated (those had POSITIVE avg OOS and a Sharpe at/above the luck bar, so shrinking the parameter surface could lift DSR) — here the OOS edge is NEGATIVE (-1.55, one window -10.17), the holdout is NEGATIVE (-1.92), DSR is 0.0, and the Sharpe is far below the luck bar, so there is nothing to tune toward and fewer parameters cannot manufacture a positive out-of-sample edge from a too-thin sample. NOT revise_hypothesis: this is overfitting on a sparse sample (is_overfitted=TRUE), not a proven mechanism stranded on a dead target — the volume-confirmed breakout mechanism's value is carried by the ADA sibling (clean sensitivity, all-positive OOS, iterating), and DOGE simply has too few qualifying breakouts to validate; reframing onto another thin alt would re-hit the same sparsity. FAILURE PATTERN: daily volume-confirmed breakout on DOGE generates only ~37 trades over 5 years, too thin and outlier-dependent to survive multiple-testing — the in-sample Sharpe (2.1) is a best-of-N artifact that collapses to negative walk-forward OOS (-1.55, with a -10.17 window) and a negative holdout (-1.92), DSR 0.0; the breakout mechanism generalizes on higher-frequency instruments (ADA, 214 trades) but not on a low-trade-count meme coin.

Implementation

Long-only daily momentum-confirmation breakout on DOGEUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perpetual. Enters when the close breaks above the prior 30-day high AND volume >= 1.5x the prior 50-day median volume. Exits on a 20% profit target, a 3xATR trailing stop, a 20-day time stop, or a breakout-failure stop (close back below the broken level). ATR-risk sizing at 2% equity per trade. OHLCV-only; identical mechanism + parameters to the validated XRP 30-bar breakout, applied to DOGE for cross-instrument generalization.

Backtest Review

Trades match the hypothesis: long-only (37 long / 0 short), 37/37 submitted cleanly, ~4.4-day holding; selective (exposure 8%); genuine alpha (beta 0.013, alpha +0.019, benchmark_meaningful=true)

Backtest Review

Strong asymmetric edge: profit_factor 2.54, avg_win/avg_loss ~3.3:1, tail_ratio 3.76, Sharpe 2.10, max_dd 5.3%, fee-light (0.98% of gross)

Backtest Review

Edge distributed across years (2020/2021/2024/2025), positive in 5 of 7 years incl. the 2022 bear; sound momentum-confirmation mechanism validated on ADA/XRP siblings; no artifacts (end_unrealized 1.5%, metrics_reliable=true)

Backtest Review

Thin sample: only 37 trades over ~6 years (~6/year) — far below the hypothesis's own >=25/year target; the volume+breakout gate filters DOGE heavily (ADA sibling had 214). 225-trial optimization risks fitting noise -> DSR/PBO hard to clear

Backtest Review

Wide sharpe CI (0.18-3.60); sharpe_ci_low just 0.18 — thin-sample uncertainty

Backtest Review

Fat-tail dependency (kurtosis 43.8, skew 5.27); 2022's +6.7% leans on the single 2022-10-29 +10.4% day; recent-year softness (2023 -3.0%, 2025 +2.9%, 2026 -3.3%)

Backtest Review

marginal

Backtest Review

30 (but ~6/yr vs 25/yr target)

Analysis

Clean execution, long-only as designed (37 long / 0 short), strong asymmetry (PF 2.54 base / 2.25 optimized, tail_ratio ~3), genuine alpha, fee-light, huge capacity

Analysis

Sensitivity passes (0 cliffs) — the in-sample parameter surface is smooth

Analysis

Deflated Sharpe 0.0, is_significant=FALSE, PBO 0.7182; optimized Sharpe 1.87 far BELOW the expected-max-under-noise bar 5.95 — indistinguishable from best-of-225 luck on a thin sample; sharpe_ci_low -0.12 (straddles 0)

Analysis

Walk-forward is_overfitted=TRUE: avg IS 2.82 -> avg OOS -1.545 (NEGATIVE), windows [-10.17, 2.58, 2.95] (first window catastrophic)

Analysis

Holdout FAILED catastrophically: holdout_sharpe -1.92 (negative), ratio 0

Analysis

Structurally thin/outlier-dependent: 37 trades (~5/yr, below the 25/yr target), base record carried by 2022-10-29 (+10.4%) and a few 2024 breakouts (kurtosis 43.8) — does not generalize out-of-sample

Outcome Summary

DogeDailyThirtyBarHighBreakoutVolumeConfirmLong applied the factory's validated, ADA/XRP-proven volume-confirmed breakout mechanism unchanged to DOGE, aiming to test generalization rather than mine parameters. Its base backtest was attractive — Sharpe 2.10, profit factor 2.54, positive in 5 of 7 years — and earned a trip to optimization, but the reviewer already flagged that only 37 trades in 6 years (well below the 25/year target) with a fat-tail dependency risked failing the deflation gates. It did: after a 225-trial search the edge inverted out-of-sample (DSR 0.0, avg OOS -1.55 with a -10.17 window, holdout -1.92), exposing the headline Sharpe as a best-of-N artifact carried by the 2022-10-29 +10.4% day and a few 2024 breakouts. The analyst abandoned it as a per-instrument sparsity failure — explicitly not iterable like the positive-OOS ADA/SOL siblings — noting the mechanism's value is preserved in the higher-frequency ADA sibling while DOGE simply has too few qualifying breakouts to validate.

Outcome Summary

A validated, generalizing mechanism can still fail on a specific instrument when that instrument is too trade-sparse: DOGE's volume+breakout gate produced only ~37 trades in 6 years, so the in-sample Sharpe was a best-of-N, outlier-carried artifact that collapsed to negative OOS — the breakout edge generalizes on higher-frequency instruments (ADA, 214 trades) but not a low-trade-count meme coin, and fewer parameters cannot manufacture an edge from too few qualifying events.

Outcome Summary

After optimization the analyst abandoned it because it failed every generalization gate decisively on a structurally thin sample: deflated Sharpe 0.0 with optimized Sharpe 1.87 far below the expected-max-luck bar of 5.95, PBO 0.72, walk-forward is_overfitted=TRUE with avg OOS -1.55 (windows [-10.17, 2.58, 2.95]), and a catastrophically negative holdout (-1.92) — the edge inverting out-of-sample.

Outcome Summary

A long-only daily breakout-with-volume-confirmation strategy on DOGEUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perp — buying closes above the prior 30-day high when volume is >=1.5x its median, with ATR-trailing/profit-target/time/breakout-failure exits — applied to DOGE as the third instrument (after ADA and XRP) testing cross-instrument generalization of the validated momentum-confirmation breakout family using identical parameters.

Outcome Summary

The base backtest looked strong but thin: +32.3% total return, Sharpe 2.10, profit factor 2.54, ~3.3:1 win/loss asymmetry, 5.3% max drawdown, huge capacity ($5.9B), positive in 5 of 7 years including the 2022 bear — but only 37 trades over ~6 years (~5-6/year, below the 25/year target) with heavy fat-tail dependency (kurtosis 43.8); optimization gave Sharpe 1.87, +38.3% and passed sensitivity (0 cliffs).
