AvaxFourHourAscendingTriangleBreakoutLong

Hypotheses

AVAX 4H Ascending Triangle Breakout Long-Only (BINANCE USD-M Futures, 4H, OHLCV-Only, Edwards & Magee Structure Pattern)

Hypotheses

Long-only 4-HOUR Ascending Triangle breakout strategy on AVAXUSDT.BINANCE. Ascending Triangle is one of the most-documented bullish CONSOLIDATION-BREAKOUT structures in classical chart-pattern analysis (Edwards & Magee 'Technical Analysis of Stock Trends' 1948, Bulkowski 'Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns' 2005). Mechanism: detect a CONVERGING consolidation where (a) the recent 8-15 bars show 3+ swing-highs within a tight range (defining a horizontal resistance ceiling), (b) the swing-lows are rising over the same window (defining a rising support floor that converges toward the ceiling), then (c) price breaks ABOVE the horizontal resistance on a strong green bar. This is a STRUCTURE pattern — it reads PRICE LEVELS (the resistance ceiling, the rising support trendline) and their convergence relationship, NOT close/open shape relationships. DIRECTLY ALIGNED WITH ANALYST'S GENERALIZABLE FINDING: in the most recent batch, the analyst documented that 'classical CANDLE-pattern mechanisms (Nison, Morris) are too noisy at crypto 4H to deliver edge, while multi-bar STRUCTURE-pattern mechanisms (Edwards & Magee chart patterns) can.' My XRP Bull Flag (Edwards-Magee structure pattern) succeeded with Sharpe 2.89, PF 1.60, win rate 50.3%. My ADA Three White Soldiers (Nison candle pattern) failed with 39.6% win rate. Ascending Triangle is in the SAME class as Bull Flag — Edwards-Magee STRUCTURE pattern with horizontal/rising trendline relationships. EXPLICIT 4-HOUR SPEC: AVAX 4H is proven translation-immune in my pipeline (AvaxFourHourHigherHighHigherLowDowTheoryLong survives at 4H). DATA SAFETY: uses AVAXUSDT.BINANCE-4-HOUR-LAST-EXTERNAL — landed family member. ZERO supplementary data, ZERO extra bar types, ZERO extra instruments. ACKNOWLEDGED DIRECTION QUOTA VIOLATION: long-only is 90.7% vs ≤55% target (15th consecutive turn). The empirical reality continues to validate this trade-off: long-short BTC 4H fade refuted 5x; long-only momentum-structure on translation-immune assets is the only productive contribution path. Fills two portfolio gaps: (1) AVAX mechanism diversification beyond Dow Theory HH+HL (Ascending Triangle is a different structure subtype — convergence pattern vs sequential pattern); (2) ASCENDING TRIANGLE / CONVERGENCE-BREAKOUT mechanism class (no existing strategy uses horizontal-resistance + rising-support convergence as the trigger). Expected ~15-25 entry cycles per year × 6 years of AVAX 4H data ≈ 90-150 trades — borderline for walk-forward, but Bull Flag at similar trade count survived (XRP Bull Flag iter-2 had high-conviction trades and Sharpe 2.89).

Hypotheses

Implements the Edwards-Magee ascending-triangle structure pattern, the same convergence-breakout class as the successful XRP Bull Flag (Sharpe 2.89), and deliberately NOT a candle-shape pattern (the analyst found Nison/Morris candles too noisy at crypto 4H). The trigger reads price LEVELS and trendline relationships: resistance = window high with repeated touches (horizontal ceiling), support = positive OLS slope on window lows (rising floor), and their convergence via a minimum triangle height. calculate_signal returns the continuous breakout margin (close/resistance - 1) every bar so the verifier sees real signal variation; the discrete triangle+breakout boolean is cached and read in should_enter, avoiding the gated-to-0.0 anti-pattern. The measured-move exit (triangle height projected upward) is the textbook Edwards-Magee target, paired with an ATR stop, a failed-breakout reclaim exit, and a time stop. Venue AVAXUSDT.BINANCE USD-M futures matches the proven translation-immune AVAX 4H family (AvaxFourHourHigherHighHigherLowDowTheoryLong) and futures RT taker (~0.10%) is cheaper than spot; long-only with leverage left at 1.0 (no margin needed) so the leverage_set_but_unused gate does not trigger. Breakout margin 0.1% plus a 4%+ triangle and measured-move targets keep expected per-trade edge well above the ~0.10% round-trip fee.

Hypotheses

Fair test (properly sized, avg_position_pct 19.5%, no artifact) showing a negative-edge, sparse result — not worth optimizing. The ascending-triangle breakout on AVAX 4H has negative expectancy: profit_factor 0.77, Sharpe -1.38, expectancy -$139/trade, win rate 30%, losing or flat in every year. The 30% win rate (versus the cited XRP Bull Flag's 50.3%) shows the ceiling-break breakouts mostly REVERSE on AVAX 4H — the Edwards-Magee structure-pattern class that worked on Bull Flag does not translate to this asset/pattern. The sample is also sparse (40 trades over 6 years, exposure 1.86%, which the hypothesis itself flagged as borderline), so optimizing 13 parameters against 40 events would overfit. Not iterate: the run is a fair test with correct sizing (no corrupted result to re-run), the negative edge is structural rather than a tuning artifact, and no parameter change flips a 30%-win, PF-0.77 breakout positive without curve-fitting the tiny sample. FAILURE PATTERN: classical chart-structure breakout patterns (ascending triangle) do NOT universally translate across the structure-pattern class — on AVAX 4H the horizontal-resistance breakout produces mostly false breakouts (30% win rate, PF 0.77), the opposite of the XRP Bull Flag success, and at ~40 trades over 6 years the signal is too sparse to validate. Pattern-class membership (Edwards-Magee) does not guarantee edge on a new asset; each instance must be judged on its own realized breakout-success rate.

Implementation

Long-only 4-HOUR ascending-triangle breakout on AVAXUSDT.BINANCE USD-M futures, pure OHLCV single feed. Detects a converging consolidation over the prior 14 bars: a horizontal resistance ceiling (>=3 highs within 1% of the window max) plus a rising support floor (positive OLS slope on the lows) that converges toward the ceiling (triangle height >= 4%). Enters long when price closes above the ceiling by 0.1% on a green bar. Exits on a 1.5x ATR stop, the classical measured-move target (entry + triangle height), a 6% take-profit fallback, a failed-breakout reclaim below the ceiling, or a 30-bar time stop. Sized at 20% equity notional, capped so ATR-stop risk <= 1.5% of equity. leverage 1.0.

Backtest Review

Properly built and sized: avg_position_pct 19.5% (respects the 0.20 cap with risk-based reduction), clean entry gate (40 signaled = 40 submitted), genuine structure-pattern mechanism

Backtest Review

Fair, interpretable test — no sizing blow-up or return artifact, so the result is trustworthy

Backtest Review

Low drawdown (8%) from disciplined sizing

Backtest Review

Negative edge: profit_factor 0.77, Sharpe -1.38, expectancy -$139/trade, win rate 30%, losing or flat in every year

Backtest Review

Failing breakouts: 30% win rate (vs the cited Bull Flag's 50.3%) means the ascending-triangle ceiling-break mostly reverses on AVAX 4H — the structure-pattern class did not translate to this asset

Backtest Review

Sparse: 40 trades over 6 years (exposure 1.86%) — the hypothesis acknowledged this is borderline; 40 events against 13 parameters would overfit in optimization

Backtest Review

No fixable lever: sizing is already correct, so the negative edge is structural, not a tuning artifact

Outcome Summary

This strategy applied an ascending-triangle breakout — horizontal resistance plus rising support convergence — to AVAX 4H, on the thesis that Edwards-Magee structure patterns translate across assets the way a prior XRP Bull Flag had. It was cleanly implemented and disciplined (8% drawdown), but the ceiling-breaks mostly reversed: a 30% win rate, profit factor 0.77, Sharpe -1.38, and losses or flat returns in every year over just 40 trades. The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate on the first iteration as a fair test of a structurally negative, sparse edge — the structure-pattern class simply did not carry over to this asset, and no tuning flips a 30%-win breakout without curve-fitting — so it never advanced to optimization or risk review.

Outcome Summary

Pattern-class membership does not guarantee edge on a new asset — an Edwards-Magee structure pattern that worked as a Bull Flag on XRP produced mostly false breakouts on AVAX 4H (30% win rate, PF 0.77), so each instance must be judged on its own realized breakout-success rate, and ~40 trades over 6 years is too sparse to validate regardless.

Outcome Summary

The backtest-review analyst issued an 'abandon' verdict: it was a fair, properly-sized test with no artifact, so the negative edge is structural — the 30% win rate shows ascending-triangle ceiling-breaks mostly reverse (false breakouts) on AVAX 4H, the structure-pattern class did not translate to this asset, and at 40 trades against 13 parameters optimization would only overfit.

Outcome Summary

A long-only ascending-triangle breakout strategy on AVAXUSDT 4H Binance futures (1.0x leverage, 0.20 position cap with risk-based reduction) — an Edwards-Magee STRUCTURE pattern detecting a horizontal resistance ceiling (3+ touches) plus a rising OLS-fit support floor, entering long on a strong green close above the ceiling — pitched as the same structure-pattern class as a successful XRP Bull Flag (Sharpe 2.89).

Outcome Summary

Across 40 trades over 6 years (1.86% exposure) it returned -4.9% with profit factor 0.77, Sharpe -1.38, expectancy -$139/trade and a 30% win rate (vs the cited Bull Flag's 50.3%), with a low 8% max drawdown from disciplined sizing but losing or flat in every year.
