A Decomposition for Mental Multiplication of Decimal Numbers
Summary
The document considers how to multiply ordinary decimal values mentally, using the example of a negative number times a positive number. The response converts the decimals into integers, adjusts for their decimal places, and breaks one factor into hundreds, tens, and units so the partial products are easier to add. It also notes that nearby round numbers can sometimes provide a useful decomposition, as in the question’s example involving values near five and seven.
The worked calculation reaches the product and demonstrates a valid arithmetic route. However, the respondent says this approach required substantial effort and was prone to careless errors, and offers no faster general technique or comparison of methods. The material is therefore a small practical illustration of place-value decomposition rather than a developed mental-math method. It may help readers understand how decimal multiplication can be rearranged, but it does not establish that the procedure is efficient for trading interviews or other time-constrained calculations.
Key ideas
- Convert decimal factors to integers and account for the total number of decimal places afterward.
- Break an integer factor into place-value components to form simpler partial products.
- A decomposition can be mathematically valid while still being effortful and error-prone to perform mentally.

# Mental math method for large integer multiplication # Mental math method for large integer multiplication I am practicing for trading interview, especially the quick calculation of mental math. But I am wondering is there any quick method to calculate the general multiplication? like the one `-4.41 * 2.86`. I know some methods for `5.01*6.99`, as `(5+0.01)(7-0.01)`. But how can I calculate a general multiplication of two simple integers or common numbers? Thanks! ## Answer by KaiSqDist (score 1) https://quant.stackexchange.com/a/78130 I would calculate it as: $-4.41*2.86 = -(440*286+286)/10,000=-(400*286+40*286+286)/10,000=-(114,400+11,440+286)/10,000=-12.6216$ But this definitely is not the best way. I expended quite abit of brainpower doing this the mental way. Had some careless mistakes too before double checking as well.
