Custom Transaction Models for Fees, Slippage, Fills, and Buying Power
Summary
This example shows how a backtest can replace default transaction assumptions with custom fee, slippage, fill, and buying-power models. Its sample algorithm trades SPY hourly during October 2013, changing its target exposure after specified calendar days. The fee model charges the greater of a minimum amount or a price-and-quantity calculation. The slippage model scales with asset price and the logarithm of order size. The buying-power example always approves orders, while the fill model uses seeded random quantities to demonstrate partial fills and tracks remaining quantities.
A second fill-model example illustrates simplified market, stop, and limit order handling using quotes or trade-bar highs and lows. These examples demonstrate implementation choices for transaction simulation; they are not evidence that the assumptions match real execution. In particular, always approving buying power and the simplified fill rules can materially distort a backtest. Researchers should treat the models as templates and calibrate fees, slippage, fills, and capital constraints to the market and venue being studied.
Key ideas
- Custom models can alter how a backtest accounts for fees, slippage, fills, and buying power.
- The sample fee and slippage formulas depend on trade value and order size.
- A seeded random fill example simulates partial executions and tracks unfilled quantity.
- The sample buying-power model approves every order, which can misrepresent capital constraints.
- Simplified fill rules require calibration before they can support conclusions about live execution.
