Evidence on Trading Volume Across Days of the Week

Article Quant Q&A · Author: develarist

Summary

The document asks whether markets show a weekly activity pattern analogous to the intraday pattern in which trading is concentrated near the open and close. In particular, it considers whether Monday and Friday trading is heavier than activity midweek, perhaps because participants establish or unwind positions at the week’s boundaries.

The reply points to a chart of daily Nasdaq trade counts and interprets it as showing no clear weekday effect in transaction volume. It adds that year-end activity may involve a concentrated burst during the final days or weeks of the year. This is a limited observation rather than a systematic test: the cited chart is not reproduced with methods or sample details, and the response does not distinguish volume from other measures of activity or establish that the pattern applies across markets and periods.

Key ideas

  • Intraday activity patterns do not by themselves imply a similar pattern across weekdays.
  • The cited Nasdaq trade-count chart is interpreted as showing little weekday variation in transaction volume.
  • The reply identifies year-end as a period that may have concentrated trading activity.
  • The evidence is informal and does not establish a general result across assets or time periods.

# More/less trading on Mondays and Fridays?

In market microstructure/high frequency finance, it is well known that the trading day has high activity in the opening hours and closing hours compared to mid-day. Can the same be said about the trading week, in that markets on Mondays and Fridays are more active than Wednesday as people open/close their positions at the start and end of the week?

It looks like there is no impact on the volume of transactions depending on the day of the week if we refer to this chart: https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-average-total-number-of-trades-daily-on-NASDAQ#:~:text=What%20is%20the%20average%20total%20number%20of%20trades%20daily%20on%20NASDAQ%3F,-ad%20b&text=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nasdaqtrader.com,daily%2C%20around%2010%20million%20trades.

The only "race" that exists is at the end of the year, and it lasts for the last days/weeks of the year.
