Factor Tear Sheets for Returns, Information, and Turnover Analysis

Code Alphalens

Summary

The document describes plotting utilities for evaluating quantitative factors through tear sheets. A summary report combines factor quantile statistics, return tables, quantile return plots, information coefficient analysis, and turnover measures. The returns report adds factor portfolio returns, alpha and beta estimates, quantile return distributions, cumulative return plots when daily returns are available, and time series of high-minus-low quantile spreads.

Inputs are a date-and-asset indexed dataset containing factor values, forward returns, quantile assignments, and optionally group labels. Options allow long-short demeaning, group adjustment, and group-specific plots. The code also assumes a business-day calendar when the data index lacks frequency metadata. These utilities organize diagnostics; they do not establish that a factor is predictive or that the displayed portfolio returns are achievable. Interpretation depends on correctly prepared inputs and suitable forward-return assumptions.

Key ideas

  • Factor observations are grouped into quantiles to compare their subsequent returns.
  • The summary report combines return, information coefficient, and turnover diagnostics.
  • Optional settings support long-short demeaning, group neutrality, and group-level analysis.
  • Cumulative return charts are produced when daily factor returns are available.
  • Missing calendar frequency triggers a business-day assumption, which may not fit every dataset.
