Finding a Broad European Financials Benchmark Through an ETF

Article Quant Q&A · Author: user22108

Summary

The document asks for a European financial-sector index comparable to a US financials index, with coverage including the UK rather than only the euro area. The response points to a Europe-focused financials exchange-traded fund as a possible source of return history and as a way to represent a basket of regional financial companies. It notes that the fund has historical data beginning in 2010 and covers 95 firms, as stated in the source.

This is a practical lead for locating an investable proxy and its constituents, rather than a comparison of index methodologies or a recommendation to use the fund as a benchmark. The document does not explain tracking error, constituent changes, currency treatment, or how to retrieve and validate the holdings. Researchers should distinguish fund returns from those of a formal index and verify whether the geographic and sector coverage fit their study.

Key ideas

  • A European financials ETF is suggested as a source of regional sector return data.
  • The suggested fund includes UK companies and tracks a basket of European financial firms.
  • Its stated sample begins in 2010 and covers 95 firms.
  • Fund returns may differ from index returns, and the document does not assess tracking error or data methodology.

I am looking for the returns of an European financial index as it is the Dow Jones U.S. Financials Index (DJUSFN) for the US. Do you know if such an index exists and if it is available on yahoo finance database? It will be better if it is an European index (UK included) and not an Eurozone index.
