Finding and Updating Bank of England Base Rate Data

Article Quant Q&A · Author: pd123

Summary

The document discusses ways to obtain the Bank of England base rate for a Java program without requiring manual user entry. Suggestions include reading the current rate from the Bank’s homepage, importing historical and current rate tables from its statistics pages, or using a spreadsheet’s table-import feature. The data can be refreshed when the application starts or through a spreadsheet import, depending on how the program is organized.

The answers emphasize that the base rate changes infrequently, so a continuously updating live feed may be unnecessary. They provide practical examples of public data sources and a simple import approach, but do not compare reliability, access limits, data formats beyond mentioning CSV, or official API support. The advice is therefore useful as a starting point for sourcing rate data, with implementation and refresh requirements left to the reader.

Key ideas

  • The Bank of England website provides a public view of its current base rate.
  • Historical and current rate tables can be used to populate an application.
  • Refreshing the rate at application startup may be sufficient because changes are infrequent.
  • A spreadsheet table-import feature offers an alternative way to retrieve the data.

I am implementing a program in Java that needs the Bank of England base rate. Rather than the user inputting this into the system, I have heard that there is a way to get a live feed of the base rate directly from (I am guessing) the Bank of England (i.e. gets automatically updated). Has anyone heard of or used something similar? - any advice would be helpful.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but they keep it updated on their homepage.

The Current Bank Rate is shown in the top of the box in the bottom right corner!

As suggested by Owe, you could use the Statistics part of the BoE website. It's not like the rate is changing every second, so you don't really need a live feed, I suppose.

You could update it on every start - for example using the Interest and Exchange Rates tables. Just generate the format you like, and download/import it to your program. For instance, here's a direct link to daily data in CSV. Parsing it shouldn't be much of a problem.

You're after some JS so this might not be for you, but you can import the table of Base Rates into Google Sheets with the following.

```
=IMPORTHTML("https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/boeapps/database/bank-rate.asp#","table",1)
```

Hope that's of some help.
