Finding Historical Stock Data for U.S. Companies

Article Quant Q&A · Author: ebrahimi

Summary

The document addresses how to obtain long historical financial and stock market data for NYSE and Nasdaq companies, including access to commercial databases such as Datastream, Bloomberg, and WRDS. It notes that those services generally require paid access and suggests Yahoo Finance as a free source for historical prices.

The answer is brief and does not compare data coverage, history length, reliability, corporate-action adjustments, or access terms. It therefore offers a starting point for finding price data rather than a full database evaluation. Researchers should check whether a source’s available history and data treatment fit their intended analysis.

Key ideas

  • Commercial financial databases generally require paid access.
  • Yahoo Finance is suggested as a free source of historical stock prices.
  • The answer does not assess data coverage or suitability for long-horizon research.

How is it possible to have access to Datastream, Bloomberg, Wrds database? Is there another free database with long historical data? In fact, I need long time series data belonging to NYSE and NASADAQ companies.

You can try finance.yahoo for example http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=GOOG+Historical+Prices it is free, for the other ones you mentioned you have to pay, usually a lot.
