Finding Machine-Readable ETF and Mutual Fund Fee Data

Article Quant Q&A · Author: Thomas Johnson

Summary

The document addresses where to obtain fee data for exchange-traded funds and mutual funds, with an emphasis on sources that offer machine-readable data. It points to Morningstar and Lipper for broad fund coverage, and names FactSet, ETF.com, and ETF Database as possible sources for ETF information. For users willing to consult websites directly, it suggests ETF.com or ETF Database for ETFs and Morningstar for mutual funds.

This is a brief list of source options rather than a comparison or data-access guide. It gives no details on fees charged by the providers, licensing, coverage, update frequency, historical availability, or the exact formats and fields offered. Researchers should verify that a source meets their specific requirements and budget before relying on it; the document does not establish which option is cheapest or most suitable.

Key ideas

  • Morningstar and Lipper are suggested for broad, machine-readable fund data.
  • FactSet, ETF.com, and ETF Database are suggested sources for ETF information.
  • Website-based research is another option, with different suggested sites for ETFs and mutual funds.
  • The document does not compare provider cost, coverage, or data quality.

Is there any online data source of ETF and/or mutual fund fees? Free or paid is fine, although hopefully there's something out there cheaper than Bloomberg

MorningStar or Lipper will be your best bets if you want everything in a nice machine readable format. factset/etf.com or etfdb are great sources for etf data.

If you want to go through the web, you can try etf.com or etfdb.com for the ETFs and morningstar.com for the mutual funds.
