Free and Low-Cost Sources for Hedge Fund and CTA Data
Summary
The document asks where researchers can obtain inexpensive or free hedge fund and commodity trading advisor data. It mentions EDHEC and mutual fund data from Yahoo Finance as starting points, then reports several replies naming additional sources. These include monthly performance for Eurekahedge indices through Quandl, a free CTA and managed futures database, and a fund database that can be filtered by fund type, strategy, country, and city.
The replies characterize available hedge fund information as often limited to monthly index values or occasional manager-performance snapshots. The discussion is a collection of suggestions rather than a comparison or evaluation: it gives no evidence about data quality, coverage, historical depth, licensing, or current availability. One source is disclosed as affiliated with a respondent. Researchers would need to check each provider's terms and verify whether its coverage and reporting frequency suit their analysis.

NilssonHedge (www.nilssonhedge.com) provides a free CTA/Managed Futures database. For browsing quant funds, this might be a good suggestion.
