Global Equity ETFs for Broad World-Market Exposure

Article Quant Q&A · Author: An old man in the sea.

Summary

The document asks whether one exchange-traded fund can provide exposure to equity markets around the world, rather than tracking a single national index. The answer points to two broad-market products: one tracking the FTSE Global All Cap Index and another tracking the MSCI All Country World Index. It characterizes the former as having a low expense ratio and the latter as highly liquid.

This is a brief product-oriented note rather than an analysis of index construction or portfolio performance. It gives no comparative holdings, regional weights, tracking error, historical returns, or detailed fee data, so investors would need current fund documentation to assess suitability and costs. Its main lesson is that broad global equity exposure is available through diversified index-tracking ETFs.

Key ideas

  • A single ETF can provide exposure to equity markets across multiple countries.
  • The cited options track broad global equity indexes.
  • The answer describes one option as low cost and the other as liquid.
  • The note provides no detailed comparison of holdings or performance.

# ETFs mimicking world economy?

We can find ETF that usually mimick some stock index, for e.g. SP500 has SPDR, Dow Jones Industrial Average has DIA, etc.

Does an ETF that tracks all these indexes exist?

If the objective is to mimick all the world's equity stock markets in a single ETF there would appear to be 2 choices:

VT which tracks something called FTSE Global All Cap Index with a very low expense ratio

ACWI tracks the MSCI All Country World Index; it is very liquid
