How OctoBot Calculates Portfolio Profitability and Trade P&L

Article OctoBot

Summary

The guide distinguishes portfolio profitability from the profit and loss history of individual trades. Portfolio profitability is calculated by valuing configured tradable assets in the selected reference market, then comparing the total value at OctoBot startup with the value of current holdings when the figure is shown. This measure therefore reflects changes in portfolio valuation, not just realized trade outcomes.

Trade P&L history instead presents profit or loss from each past trade independently of the portfolio’s historical asset valuation. The guide says this history is visible in the Trading tab and may not be available in every trading mode. It also explains that profitability history can be reset from the Portfolio tab, while resetting trade P&L requires clearing trade history. The page describes software accounting behavior rather than a trading strategy, and gives no performance evidence or accounting treatment beyond these definitions.

Key ideas

  • Portfolio profitability compares the current value of configured tradable assets with their value when OctoBot started.
  • Asset values for the profitability calculation are expressed in the configured reference market.
  • Trade P&L history tracks the outcomes of individual historical trades separately from portfolio valuation changes.
  • Profitability and trade P&L histories are reset through different parts of the interface.

## Historique de profitabilité

Every asset in OctoBot is valued using the **reference market** setting
(available in [Trading settings](/guides/octobot-configuration/profile-configuration#reference-market)).
Profitably follows this principle.

![home](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Drakkar-Software/OctoBot/assets/wiki_resources/home.jpg)

To compute its profitability, OctoBot evaluates the value of all its
traded assets (the ones available for trading in its configuration) by
getting their value in reference market. Profitability is the difference
between the total value of the traded assets when OctoBot
started and the total value of current holdings at the moment
profitability is displayed.

## Historique de PNL

Profit and loss (PNL) history, which is the profit from each historical trade independently from your portfolio assets historical valuation, is displayed on the "Trading" tab.

You can see it as "pure profits or losses from your trading strategy".

> Please note that PNL history is not available on every trading mode.

## Réinitialiser l'historique de profitabilité

You can reset your OctoBot's profitability history from the **Portfolio** tab.

## Réinitialiser l'historique de PNL
Profit and loss history is computed using trades history. You can reset it by clearing the trades history from the **Trading** tab.
