Identifying Legacy Short-Term Gold Option Symbols
Summary
The document concerns historical options data on gold futures and asks what the symbols L01 through L31 represent. It contrasts those codes with the standard American-style gold futures option symbol and the listed weekly option symbols, showing that a dataset may contain contract identifiers absent from a current product specification.
The brief accepted response points to a clearing advisory and characterizes the L-series as short-term gold options that were later delisted. This gives a possible explanation for encountering the codes in historical records, but the document does not reproduce the advisory’s details or establish expiration conventions, listing dates, or exact symbol mappings. Researchers working with archived data would need the original exchange reference or vendor metadata to confirm how each code should be interpreted and which records belong to each contract.
Key ideas
- Historical options datasets can contain contract symbols missing from current product specifications.
- The response identifies the L-series as short-term gold options that were later delisted.
- The document provides no individual mapping or contract specifications for the L-series symbols.
- Exchange reference material or dataset metadata is needed to verify symbol interpretation.

# Symbols for options on gold futures # Symbols for options on gold futures I have a historical data set containing only options on gold futures. If I print out a unique list of option symbols I get: `GC, L01, L02, L03, L04, L05, L06, L07, L08, L09, L10, L11, L12, L13, L14, L15, L16, L17, L18, L19, L20, L21, L22, L23, L24, L25, L26, L27, L28, L29, L30, L31, OG1, OG2, OG3, OG4, OG5.` On the CME contract spec they only list two option types, American Options with symbol GC, and weekly options with symbols OG1 thru OG5. My question is what are the other symbols L01 thru L31? ## Answer by rupweb (score 1, accepted) https://quant.stackexchange.com/a/17383 http://www.cmegroup.com/tools-information/lookups/advisories/clearing/Chadv14-394.html?source=rss looks like they are short term gold options that were delisted...
