Interpreting Initial-Margin Concentration Among Clearing Members
Summary
The document explains the meaning of the IM5/IM ratio in a table about initial margin posted to a European central counterparty. IM5 is the combined initial-margin balance of the five largest clearing members, while IM is the balance across all members. A value of 0.73 therefore means that the five largest members account for 73% of the total initial margin in the example discussed.
The ratio is presented as a measure of risk concentration: a higher share indicates that more of the posted margin is associated with a small group of participants. The answer notes that the table does not identify the five members, and its description of the total participant count is approximate. The explanation clarifies how to read the ratio but does not assess the adequacy of the margin, quantify default risk, or describe how concentration changes over time.
Key ideas
- IM5 represents the combined initial margin posted by the five largest clearing members.
- IM represents the total initial margin posted by all members.
- The IM5/IM ratio gives the top five members’ share of total posted initial margin.
- The ratio indicates concentration but does not, by itself, quantify default risk or margin adequacy.

# Clarification of a term used in margin management by top counterparties # Clarification of a term used in margin management by top counterparties I am doing some primary research on margin management for different global counterparties and have come across the paper "The European central counterparty (CCP) ecosystem" by Armakolla et al from 2017. On page 19, the following table is provided to show the the posted the initial margin by some top European clearing members: I don't understand the column `IM5/IM`, whose definition as provided is `M5/IM is the portion of initial margin posted by the largest 5 clearing members` in this table. If I go by this definition, what is exactly meant by 0.73 as `IM5/IM` value for EuroCCP, for example? ## Answer by nbbo2 (score 0, accepted) https://quant.stackexchange.com/a/76149 You asked how to interpret the IM5/IM ratio for EuroCCP. EuroCCP is now called CBOEClearEurope. The clearing members (participants) are shown here https://clear.cboe.com/europe/services/membership/participants Some of these have bigger initial margin balances than others. If we add up the margins of the 5 biggest (unfortunately they don't tell us the names, but they are on that list, and are probably the more well-known names) it would be 73% of the total balances. In summary IM5 are the balances of the top 5 and IM is the balances of ALL (approximately 25) participants. IM5/IM is the ratio of these two numbers. It is a measure of risk concentration.
