Interpreting Yahoo Finance Equity Volume by Exchange
Summary
The document considers what exchange coverage is represented by equity volume downloaded from Yahoo Finance, especially when the data is used in academic studies. The answer says that price and volume data are associated with the exchange specified for the security, rather than being an aggregate across every exchange on which the company trades. This matters when selecting a ticker: the exchange identity attached to the instrument determines which venue's reported volume is being examined.
The response offers a practical interpretation of the source, but it does not establish whether Yahoo’s current data handling follows the same rule in every market or for every instrument. It also does not assess feed completeness, reporting delays, off-exchange trading, or whether venue-specific volume represents total market activity. Researchers using the data should therefore treat the answer as a venue-level explanation, not proof that the reported figure captures all trading in the security.
Key ideas
- The answer describes Yahoo Finance volume as exchange-specific rather than an aggregation across listing venues.
- The exchange selected for the price series determines the venue associated with its reported volume.
- A venue-specific figure should not automatically be interpreted as total market volume.
- The document provides no assessment of data completeness or the representativeness of the reported volume.

# source for yahoo finance equities volume traded # source for yahoo finance equities volume traded I am looking at some academic studies regarding volume of stock traded. Yahoo Finance is used as the data source for volume. Does anyone know where the volume figure comes from? Is it a compilation of feeds from a number of exchanges? Or just a couple of exchanges? Assuming that the volume reported by Yahoo Finance is a subset of total volume traded, does anyone have an opinion as to whether or not the figure is representative of what actually trades in a particular day? ## Answer by dalcam (score -2) https://quant.stackexchange.com/a/10978 Any share can be listed on any exchange. However Yahoo allows you to get the Price Data per exchange. So the Price Data (including volume) you download will be the volume that was traded on the exchange that you have specified to get the Data from. Not an accumulation of exchanges that the company may be listed on. When you type a ticker in google, the exchange is listed after the company name. For example type BHP, an australian company. The exchanges they are listed on show below that, and you can request that data specific to the exchange you are interested in. Hope that helps.
