Introductory Resources for Leveraged Loans and Loan Modeling

Article Quant Q&A · Author: SQLCurious

Summary

This response points readers seeking an introduction to leveraged or syndicated loans toward educational resources and examples of loan valuation models. It highlights a loan handbook, two bank models, and an article on valuing and assessing the risk of floating-rate term loans with prepayment options and a LIBOR floor. These topics indicate key features to understand: floating-rate coupons, benchmark-rate floors, and the borrower’s ability to prepay.

The remaining suggestions include general primers, a loan-market guide, and an industry trade association as starting points for basic mechanics and product attributes. The response characterizes comprehensive tutorials as scarce and provides a curated list rather than explaining loan modeling itself. Several cited materials are dated, access to one handbook is described as client-only, and the brief notes do not verify whether the referenced publications remain available or reflect current market conventions.

Key ideas

  • Leveraged loans are also called syndicated loans or bank loans.
  • Floating-rate term loans can include benchmark-rate floors and prepayment options.
  • Loan valuation and risk modeling should account for these contract features.
  • The response recommends handbooks, model examples, market primers, and industry materials as learning resources.
  • The suggested publications vary in date and access, so readers should check current availability and conventions.

What are some good, preferably free, introductions to leveraged loans, also known as syndicated loans or bank loans? The introduction should describe the basic mechanics and very importantly provide an understanding of the important attributes of these products and how they may be modeled.

Good leveraged loan tutorials are few and far between. I've looked far and wide, and the best I ever found was a leveraged loan handbook published by citigroup (by William Deitrick) in 2006 which is free for clients. Citi and Barclays also have two decent (but very different) bank loan models. For Citi, search for Terry Benzschawel. For Barclays, look in the "Quantitative Credit Quarterly" for 2011 Q3/Q4, an article on "valuation and risk of floating-rate term loans with prepayment option and Libor floor" by Claus Pedersen.

Here are some links to other stuff I could find freely available on the web.

- Start with wikipedia and links contained therein

- Milken Institute Primer

- S&P Guide to the Loan Market

- Loan Syndication and Trading Association
