Limit Order Book Signals for Short-Horizon Price Forecasting
Summary
The document asks how traders might infer very short-term price direction from a cryptocurrency limit order book. It describes a trader who takes long or short positions over horizons ranging from seconds to a few minutes, apparently using visible order book information. The question mentions terms such as gamma, alpha, and beta, but does not define them or establish how they relate to the observed book.
No specific forecasting method, research result, or tested strategy is provided; the content is a request for learning resources. It therefore offers no evidence for the reported high success rate and does not explain whether the terms refer to standard quantitative concepts or the trader’s own language. A learner would need to study order book mechanics and short-horizon market microstructure, then evaluate any signal with appropriate data and execution assumptions. The account leaves fees, slippage, latency, and out-of-sample validation unaddressed.
Key ideas
- The question concerns forecasting price direction from visible limit order book data over very short horizons.
- The trader’s references to gamma, alpha, and beta are not defined in the document.
- No concrete signal, empirical evidence, or reproducible strategy is supplied.
- Claims about trading success cannot be assessed without data and validation details.
- Fees, slippage, latency, and execution assumptions can matter for short-horizon strategies.

# Forecasting short term price movements from limit order book # Forecasting short term price movements from limit order book I am new to HFT and quantitative finance so please bear with me if I ask anything obvious or weird. I am following a crypto trader who just looks the limit order book of the coin and then open the long or short trade based on that on a short time horizon, like for next 30 seconds to 1 or 2 mins max. He has consistently shown a very high probability of success in this. Once in a live session he pointed out in the order book and said there is very strong gamma. In another session he said here is alpha & beta pointing out the limit order book. Obviously I am not asking about his strategy or anything like that, I just want to learn about these concepts which he is using. Can someone please give me the right direction on this. Any research paper, articles or videos which I should start from. Thanks
