Passive Index Replication Versus Rules-Based Investing
Summary
The document raises a portfolio-management classification question: whether rules-based investing counts as passive when passive management is understood as replicating an index and active management as deviating from one. It contrasts that framing with an exam answer that defines passive investing as following a rule and active trading as relying on a manager’s individual, changing decisions.
The text contains no replies or resolution, so it does not establish a definitive classification. Its useful distinction is that an investment process can be systematic without necessarily being index-tracking: whether it is called active or passive depends on the benchmark and the meaning assigned to those terms. The question invites clarification of those definitions but offers no examples, evidence, or discussion of how rules-based strategies are implemented. It is therefore a starting point for distinguishing process from portfolio objective, rather than a complete explanation.
Key ideas
- Passive management is often described as tracking an index, while active management departs from a benchmark.
- Following explicit rules does not, by itself, determine whether a strategy is active or passive.
- The classification depends on how the strategy relates to its benchmark and how the terms are defined.
- The document poses this distinction but provides no answer or supporting examples.

# Active or Passive strategy? # Active or Passive strategy? From my reading, passive portfoliomanagement means to replicate an index, active portfoliomanagement means to deviate from an index. Does that mean that e.g. rules-based investing is actually an active investment approach? I wrote on an exam, that passive means to follow a certain rule, while active trading means to dynamically decide individually by a portfolio manager.
