PatchTST: A Patch-Based Transformer for Time-Series Forecasting
Summary
This document presents the PatchTST neural-network backbone for forecasting multivariate time series. It divides each input series into overlapping patches, projects each patch into a learned feature space, adds positional encodings, and processes the resulting sequence with stacked Transformer encoder layers. The encoder treats each input variable independently through the attention stack, then a prediction head maps the encoded patches to the target horizon.
The architecture also supports reversible instance normalization, optional end padding, dropout, residual attention, and either a shared forecasting head or separate heads for each variable. These design choices offer ways to control normalization, patch coverage, model capacity, and cross-variable parameter sharing. The provided material is implementation code rather than a trading experiment: it reports no asset universe, evaluation method, or forecasting results.
For quantitative use, the backbone is a modeling component, not evidence of predictive edge. Its performance will depend on data preparation, patch length and stride, model configuration, training procedure, and out-of-sample validation. The excerpt gives no guidance on transaction costs or portfolio construction.
Key ideas
- PatchTST converts a time series into patches and embeds each patch before applying Transformer attention.
- The encoder processes variables independently, while the forecasting head can share parameters or use a separate head per variable.
- Reversible instance normalization can normalize inputs before encoding and restore the scale of forecasts afterward.
- Patch length, stride, padding, and model dimensions determine the sequence representation and forecast architecture.
- The implementation alone provides no evidence that forecasts are accurate or profitable in trading.
