Plotting Technical Indicators and Signals in Strategy Reports

Article OctoBot

Summary

This short guide explains how to add a technical indicator series to a strategy run report. It describes a plotting call that takes a chart label, x-axis values, y-axis values, and optional times when signals occur. Its example uses RSI values and corresponding signal times, showing how the plotted indicator can be tied to the strategy’s time series.

The document is a usage note rather than a discussion of indicator design or trading performance. It does not explain how to calculate RSI, interpret its levels, choose signal rules, or validate a strategy. The charting method therefore helps visualize existing indicator outputs and signal events, but the guide provides no evidence that any particular indicator or signal is profitable.

Key ideas

  • A strategy report can display an indicator as a series against supplied x-axis values.
  • The plotting function accepts a chart name and corresponding x and y data.
  • Signal times can optionally be marked alongside the indicator values.
  • The example illustrates plotting RSI output but does not cover its calculation or interpretation.

# Plotting indicators
Indicators and associated signals can be easily plotted using the
`plot_indicator(ctx, name, x, y, signals)` keyword.

Where:
- `name`: name of the indicator on the chart
- `x`: values to use for the x axis
- `y`: values to use for the y axis
- `signal`: (optional) x values for which a signal is fired

Example where the goal is to plot the value of the rsi indicator from
the [example script](/guides/octobot-script#script-example-rsi-strategy).
``` python
await obs.plot_indicator(ctx, "RSI", time_values, indicator_values, signal_times)
```
