Preparing Backtest Data and Estimating Intraday Positions

Code pyfolio

Summary

This utility module prepares trading results for performance analysis. It extracts returns, positions, and transactions from a backtest, normalizes dates, and converts positions into a format suitable for reporting. It also includes display helpers, annualization constants, and functions for formatting tables and charts. These are supporting tools rather than a trading strategy, but they help researchers handle and present backtest data consistently.

For intraday strategies, the module can infer positions from transactions when requested. Its heuristic compares the number of end-of-day positions with the number of distinct assets traded, then estimates representative daily holdings by finding when cumulative transaction exposure peaks. The code itself notes that this is an estimate; transaction-based exposure may not capture actual holdings or intraday market values precisely. It provides no validation results or accuracy assessment, so the inferred positions should be treated as an analytical approximation.

Key ideas

  • The module converts backtest outputs into returns, positions, and transaction data for performance analysis.
  • It uses a trading-activity heuristic to identify strategies that may be intraday.
  • Its intraday position estimate uses the point of maximum cumulative transaction exposure during each day.
  • The inferred exposure is approximate and is not accompanied by evidence of its accuracy.
