Pyfolio Time-Series Metrics and Bootstrap Forecast Cones

Code pyfolio

Summary

This Python module documents time-series analytics for evaluating investment returns. It wraps metrics such as drawdown, annualized return and volatility, Calmar, Omega, Sortino, Sharpe, alpha, and beta, along with turnover-related utilities. Several risk functions are marked deprecated in favor of a separate analytics package, which affects how users should interpret the module’s ongoing support.

The excerpt also describes a nonparametric bootstrap forecast cone: repeatedly sample observed daily returns, simulate future cumulative paths, and summarize bounds around the projected mean at selected standard-deviation levels. A helper extracts return observations for named historical periods. The documentation specifies inputs and outputs, including sample count and random seed, but supplies no empirical performance results. Forecast cones depend on the in-sample return distribution being informative about future returns; resampling alone does not establish that assumption.

Key ideas

  • The module exposes common return, risk, and benchmark-relative performance measures.
  • Several risk metric wrappers are deprecated in favor of another package.
  • Bootstrap cones estimate future cumulative-return ranges by resampling historical daily returns.
  • Historical event windows can be extracted from a return series for focused analysis.
  • The excerpt documents functions but provides no evidence that forecasts predict future outcomes.
