Reading UK GDP Industry Groups B–E in ONS Production Data

Article Quant Q&A · Author: ignoring_gravity

Summary

The document explains the industry grouping represented by B–E in an Office for National Statistics UK GDP series. In the cited classification, A covers agriculture, forestry and fishing; B through E cover industries that manufacture or produce goods; F denotes construction; and G through T cover services. The series title also includes CVM, which the questioner already identifies as chained volume measure.

The answer points readers toward ONS methodology material for the sector definitions and a more detailed industry breakdown. This helps interpret the scope of a macroeconomic production series, which can matter when using economic data in analysis. The post does not describe a trading strategy, statistical method, or empirical relationship between GDP groups and asset returns; its contribution is limited to interpreting the classification labels.

Key ideas

  • The B–E grouping represents goods-producing and manufacturing industries in the cited UK classification.
  • The broader classification separates agriculture, construction, and services into other letter groups.
  • ONS methodology documents provide further detail about the industries within each group.
  • The post clarifies data terminology but does not analyze market behavior.
