Sources for International Financial Sector Flow of Funds Data

Article Quant Q&A · Author: fni

Summary

The document seeks free, aggregate data that could help estimate leverage in banking and financial sectors across Europe, Japan, Asia Pacific, and North America. It points readers toward comparative flow of funds analysis covering the United States, Japan, and the euro area, as well as country level accounts published by European institutions and Canadian financial flow accounts.

These sources offer starting points for cross region comparisons of financial sector balance sheets and flows. The response describes the European report as extensive and directs readers to institutional data collections as an alternative route. However, it does not provide a leverage definition, explain how to calculate a comparable ratio from the accounts, or identify coverage for every requested country. Researchers would need to verify the current availability, categories, and consistency of the data before making regional comparisons.

Key ideas

  • Flow of funds accounts can provide inputs for studying aggregate financial sector leverage.
  • The cited resources cover comparative accounts for the United States, Japan, and the euro area.
  • European country level accounts and Canadian financial flow accounts are also suggested.
  • The document does not specify a common leverage measure or confirm full coverage of the requested regions.

Does someone know free resources to estimate the leverage of the banking and financial sector at an aggregate level? In particular I would be interested in something like Federal Reserve’s Flow of Funds for the following regions:

-Europe (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom)

-Japan

-Asia Pacific (Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Singapore)

-North America (Canada, United States)

Thanks

High level Flow of funds comparative analysis for the U.S., Japan, and Euro Area by the bank of Japan.

Country level report from the ECB. It is an 800+ page report so the link may take time to load (alternatively go to ECB data warehouse/reports/Euro Area accounts).

Canadian financial flow accounts data.
