Sources for US Stock Fundamentals: Compustat, WRDS, and EODHistorical

Article Quant Q&A · Author: intuition

Summary

The document names two possible sources for fundamental data on US public companies. One answer recommends Compustat and notes that university access to the Wharton Research Data Services platform commonly provides access to it. Another respondent says they use EODHistorical for fundamentals and describes its interface as straightforward to integrate.

The original question seeks data in an unstandardized form and mentions difficulty working with SEC XBRL files, but the replies do not clarify whether either source supplies fundamentals in the requested original format. They also provide no comparison of coverage, fields, historical depth, licensing, accuracy, or cost. Treat the suggestions as leads to investigate rather than a definitive source evaluation.

Key ideas

  • Compustat is suggested as a source for US company fundamentals.
  • University affiliation may provide access to Compustat through WRDS.
  • EODHistorical is mentioned as another fundamentals source with an API.
  • The replies do not establish whether these sources meet the request for original, non-standardized data.

I'm looking for fundamental data on US public companies. If anyone could recommend paid or free sources of the fundamentals in original, non-standardized form that would be great. I tried scraping the XBRL files from the SEC but its way too complicated.

Not sure what you mean by non-standardized, but probably Compustat may be what you are looking for. If you have any connection to a university, almost all universities will have access to WRDS which will give you access to Compustat.

I use EODHistorical for fundamentals. The API is simple to plug in.
