Using a Chow Test to Compare Regression Relationships Across Periods

Article Quant Q&A · Author: RobertC

Summary

The document concerns testing whether a relationship in time-series data changed across a specified breakpoint. Its example uses monthly credit default swap values, divided into an earlier period and a later period, and asks how to conduct a Chow test with Excel or R. A response recommends the strucchange package in R and points to its documentation and worked vignette as practical guidance.

The exchange offers a software starting point rather than a full statistical explanation. It does not show the regression specification, calculate a test statistic, report a p-value, or interpret an outcome for the CDS example. A Chow test evaluates a structural break under its model assumptions; the split date and the regression being compared need to be justified, and the result alone does not explain why a change occurred. The response also discourages relying on Excel for more involved statistical analysis but does not assess particular Excel add-ins.

Key ideas

  • A Chow test can assess whether regression parameters differ across a chosen breakpoint.
  • The example divides monthly credit default swap observations into two periods.
  • The response recommends the strucchange package in R and its documentation for implementation guidance.
  • The exchange does not provide a model specification, test result, or interpretation for the example.

Has anyone used Excel or R Studio to do a simple Chow Test (compare a set of data before and after one particular year)? I have tried to find info but there is not much, especially regarding the use of Excel.

I have monthly CDS values from January 2004 to December 2010. I have to split them in two - 2004-2006 and 2007-2010 - and I have to see how they changed from one period to another. The values are in basis points.

You can do a Chow test with the strucchange package in R. You can find the full documentation here.

The package comes with a vignette which shows how to use it (see p. 9ff. if you want to dive into an example without further ado).

I don't know whether there is an appropriate Excel add-in available but in general I would not recommend doing these more sophisticated analyses in Excel anyway.
