Using Market News to Explain After-Hours Futures Volume Spikes

Article Quant Q&A · Author: Gascoyne

Summary

The document considers how a trader might identify the cause of a sudden increase in overnight futures volume. Its example is a sharp burst in trading activity in an S&P futures contract after midnight, prompting a question about where to find timely market news. The response identifies a Bank of Japan announcement as the event behind the observed move.

The practical takeaway is to check established financial news coverage for major policy announcements, which are often reported broadly, including outside regular market hours. The answer names mainstream financial media and a market commentary outlet as examples of places to look. It does not provide a systematic news-monitoring workflow, timestamp comparison, or evidence showing how the announcement affected price or volume. The example therefore illustrates event attribution rather than a general method for proving the cause of every after-hours volume spike.

Key ideas

  • A major central bank announcement can coincide with a sudden after-hours futures volume increase.
  • Check financial news coverage when investigating unusual overnight market activity.
  • The example attributes the cited futures volume burst to a Bank of Japan announcement.
  • The response offers an illustrative attribution, not a repeatable event-detection method.

How can a day trader figure out what event might have triggered a sudden spike in volume that occurs after hours?

Example: a quarter past midnight (NYSE time), the ES Dec 2016 future is crawling slowly... then suddenly, THIS:

From a volume of zero, to a volume of 1000 in 5 seconds.

I know that ES futures volume picks up after midnight, but this occured 15 minutes later, and the general question is,

Where can one find rapid-fire market news after hours?

Some Twitter account perhaps? Traders' chatrooms?

What happened was the BoJ announcement. Such large scale news are well covered in mainstream media (ft, bloomberg, etc) and also mainstream anti-media (eg zerohedge).
