Why a 13F Filing Can Show Less Than a Manager’s Total AUM
Summary
The document explains why a large investment manager’s reported assets under management may greatly exceed the value visible in its Form 13F filing. The filing covers certain reportable U.S. equity holdings, rather than providing a complete inventory of everything a manager oversees. Foreign holdings and positions held through index derivatives, among other exposures outside the filing’s scope, may therefore be absent from the reported total.
The response also notes that a macro-oriented manager may have relatively few individual stock positions, with reported holdings concentrated in index exchange-traded funds. The filing’s value should consequently be read as a partial view of reportable holdings, not as total AUM or a full description of the strategy. The explanation is general and gives no detailed breakdown of the manager’s omitted exposures or filing rules.
Key ideas
- A Form 13F does not report a manager’s full assets under management.
- The filing reflects certain reportable U.S. equity holdings and may omit foreign positions and index derivatives.
- A macro manager may rely more on broad index exposures than on individual stock selection.
- A 13F filing is a partial view of holdings and should not be treated as a complete portfolio inventory.

# why bridgewater filing only shows 10 billion in AUM # why bridgewater filing only shows 10 billion in AUM bridgewater supposed to manage 200 billion, but it 13F filling only shows 10 billion in AUM https://fintel.io/i13f/bridgewater-associates-lp/2018-09-30-0 why is it? ## Answer by Lliane (score 5) https://quant.stackexchange.com/a/42875 These are just single stock holdings in the US, excluding index derivatives positions/foreign positions. They are a allegdly a "macro fund" so I wouldn't expect them to do too much stock picking either. Actually most of their 13F positions are index ETF.
