Why Some Stocks Have No Daily Trade or OHLC Record

Article Quant Q&A · Author: Xaree Lee

Summary

The document explains why a listed stock may have no daily price record even when the exchange is open. A stock does not necessarily trade each day: if no buyer or seller submits an order that leads to a transaction, there may be no new trade price from which a data vendor can form that day’s OHLC values. The quoted explanation frames this as a market with no new transaction moving the observed price.

Possible reasons include low liquidity, a small market capitalization, or the existence of a more actively traded share class from the same issuer. The examples include securities described as SPACs or microcaps and paired share classes. For someone seeking more consistent liquidity, the answer suggests screening constituents of larger-capitalization indexes. The explanation is general rather than a diagnosis of every symbol in the question; it does not distinguish exchange halts, vendor coverage gaps, or other data-quality causes, and it provides no trade-level evidence for the listed names.

Key ideas

  • A stock can go an entire session without a transaction, so no new trade-based daily record may appear.
  • Low liquidity and small market capitalization can make a stock trade infrequently.
  • An alternative share class may attract more trading activity than another class from the same issuer.
  • Larger-capitalization index constituents are suggested as a way to seek more consistent liquidity.
  • Missing vendor data alone does not establish why a particular security lacks a daily record.

I try to download market daily data after US markets close.

I found that the stocks in the following list have no data today.

```
LBTYB
WLYB
CSTA
SAGA
FSRX
HVBC
CMCA
ELSE
WSO-B
...
```

I try to find the OHLC data on TradingView and Yahoo Finance, but they don't have today's data for the stocks on the above list.

I did not find any news or announcement about those stocks. Why is that?

There's a common misconception that everything must trade every day / hour / minute when the market is open.

Quite simply, the price is in equilibrium - no new buyers willing to push the bid higher and no sellers wishing to push the ask lower.

There may be various reasons for this - there might be alternative classes of stock to trade (eg. LBTYA instead of LBTYB, WLY instead of WLYB etc.) or quite simply the stock just isn't very liquid (some of the SPACs you mentioned) or just has a low market cap (eg. HVBC is considered to be a Microcap).

If you seek liquidity you should instead consider stocks that are constituents of higher cap indices such as S&P 500, Russell 1000, etc.
