DOT Binance USD-M Dual-Timeframe Momentum Confluence — Long-Short 4H Trend Aligned with the Daily Trend, Flat on Disagreement, ATR Trailing Exit (Volatility-Scaled, Single-Bar, 3-Parameter)
Outcome: Abandoned
DotBinanceDualTimeframeMomentumConfluenceLS
Outcome Summary
DotBinanceDualTimeframeMomentumConfluenceLS applied the confluence mechanism validated on BTC and ADA to DOT, reasoning it was the nearest untested large-cap L1 in that clean-trending class. The fair long-history test refuted that grouping: +38% but Sharpe just 0.208 with a confidence interval straddling zero, profit factor 1.08, carried entirely by 2021/2023 bull years with a deeply negative recent regime, and capacity of only ~$1.38M against 26.9% impact cost. The analyst abandoned it at backtest review, placing DOT firmly with the SOL/AVAX/XRP laggards the family reliably fails on rather than the ADA class. It never reached optimization, analysis, or risk review.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-short, single-instrument, single-bar-type momentum-confluence trend follower on DOTUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perpetual, 4H bars -- the exact construction that cleared significance on ADA and BTC. All reads come from the same 4H series: a fixed 12-bar fast EMA, a slow EMA at 12*ema_ratio, and a daily-horizon trend EMA of 135 bars (~22 days). calculate_signal returns (EMA_fast - EMA_slow)/ATR14 every bar -- a continuous, volatility-scaled momentum read. ENTRY only when its sign agrees with the daily-horizon trend (close above/below the trend EMA); disagreement means FLAT. EXIT on a 3x-ATR trailing stop from the best close since entry or on the close crossing the trend EMA against the position. Volatility-scaled sizing risks ~1.5% of equity at the trailing-stop distance (qty = equity*0.015/(3*ATR)), hard-capped at 25% of equity x 2x leverage. Three tunables: ema_ratio, trend_ema, trail_atr_mult.
Verification Results
Analyst/backtest_review: weigh whether a PF-1.26 / sandbox-Sharpe-0.11 sleeve justifies optimization budget given the session's repeated deflated-Sharpe rejections of this band; weight the recent flat-to-negative window (where the OOS windows and holdout sit) heavily. The mechanism is validated only on ADA/BTC, not DOT.
Modest, sub-threshold edge — the asset-selection thesis (DOT behaves like the ADA/BTC winners) is NOT confirmed, an analyst/backtest_review call rather than a code defect. The developer transparently reports DOT lands with SOL (Sharpe 0.79) and AVAX (0.34) in the 'positive but sub-threshold' group, not with ADA (optimized 1.75) or BTC (1.99): full-sample PF 1.26, avg +0.63%/trade, but sandbox Sharpe 0.11, PF 1.10, with the bootstrap Sharpe CI [-1.48, 1.71] straddling zero. The recent window is flat-to-negative (trailing-365d -0.11%/trade, 2025 -0.81%, sandbox avg_trade_return_pct +0.578% but only barely edging fees on a risk-adjusted basis), and the developer's sensitivity sweep shows no in-bounds parameterization lifts DOT into the winner class (best corner 180/4 tops at PF 1.48 with 2025 still negative). This edge likely will not clear the deflated-Sharpe hurdle that rejected the 0.3-1.3 band repeatedly this session.
For live deployment, reconstruct _side/_extreme/_entry_atr from cache.positions_open() rather than the current signal.
should_exit() infers _side from the live signal sign on restart (_side==0) and re-seeds _entry_atr/_extreme from current values. Unreachable in backtest (state persists); only a live mid-position crash-restart risk, where it could pick the wrong side or reset the trailing reference.

434 trades over ~5y is a measurable sample; decorrelated (beta 0.011); avg_trade_return_pct 0.72% is nominally above fees
Sharpe 0.208 with CI-low -0.4669 — straddles zero deeply, not significant; far below the family DSR-clearing bar and weaker than the abandoned SOL (0.79) / AVAX (0.34)
profit_factor 1.08 — fee-edge zone (L18), not the 2.0+ of the ADA/BTC winners
Capacity blocker: capacity_usd only $1.38M with impact_cost_pct 26.9% — thin DOT liquidity eats over a quarter of gross PnL
Recent regime deeply negative (2025 -11.1%, 2024 -0.2%, 2026 -1.4%); record carried only by 2021/2023 bull years; rolling_sharpe negative through 2024-2026
The 'DOT is in the ADA class' premise is falsified — it is a choppy laggard, not a clean-trending L1
Outcome Summary
Grouping an asset into a validated 'clean-trending' class by narrative is a hypothesis to be tested, not assumed — DOT behaved like the choppy laggards (SOL/AVAX/XRP), and the fair test falsified the premise with a Sharpe CI straddling zero, a fee-edge profit factor, and thin capacity, all carried by two bull years.
The analyst abandoned it at backtest review: the premise that DOT belongs to the clean-trending ADA class was falsified — it lands in the choppy-laggard tier below even the abandoned SOL and AVAX, with a Sharpe CI straddling zero far below the family's ~1.5 DSR-clearing bar, profit factor in the fee-edge zone, and a capacity blocker ($1.38M, 26.9% impact) that consumes over a quarter of gross PnL, so the edge if any exists only at toy scale.
A long-short, single-instrument dual-timeframe momentum-confluence trend follower on DOTUSDT.BINANCE USD-M 4H (3 parameters) that aligned a fast/slow EMA spread with a ~22-day trend EMA — all from one bar series — going flat on disagreement and trailing winners with an ATR stop, betting DOT belonged to the clean-trending 'ADA class' where the confluence mechanism had cleared significance.
The backtest (DOTUSDT.BINANCE 4H, 2174 data days from 2020-08) returned +38% over 434 trades but with no edge: Sharpe 0.208 (CI-low -0.467, straddling zero deeply), profit factor 1.08 (fee-edge zone), avg_trade_return_pct 0.72%, max drawdown 16.2% (CI to 56.5%). Capacity was just $1.38M with 26.9% impact cost, and the record was carried by 2021/2023 bull years with deeply negative recent years (2025 -11.1%, 2024 -0.2%, 2026 -1.4%).
