XRP Perp 4H Funding-Extreme Momentum Continuation (Single-Instrument USD-M, Long-Short, Validated-Template Decorrelated Breadth)
Outcome: Abandoned
XrpPerp4hFundingExtremeMomentumContinuationLS
Outcome Summary
XrpPerp4hFundingExtremeMomentumContinuationLS aimed to add a decorrelated third sleeve of a funding-extreme momentum-follow edge, picking XRP for its idiosyncratic payments/regulatory catalysts so its returns would diversify the SOL and DOGE members. Unlike its negative BTC and LINK siblings, its headline was marginally positive (+20.2%, profit factor 1.06), but the analyst showed this was illusory: the Sharpe of 0.22 had a CI straddling zero, the entire gain came from a single late-2024 catalyst window with three negative years elsewhere, and a $2.82M capacity with 18.8% impact made it undeployable. The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate on its second iteration, noting again that the cited SOL validation never occurred and that the funding-as-direction family has now failed across BTC, LINK, ETH, AVAX, DOGE, and XRP. The recorded conclusion was that the single-instrument funding-as-direction substrate is exhausted, and the very idiosyncratic catalyst the hypothesis marketed is precisely what made the result a one-window artifact rather than a real edge.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-short single-instrument funding-extreme momentum-continuation on XRPUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perpetual futures, 4-hour bars, OHLCV + funding only. Funding is the primary trigger (signal only, never credited as cash flow): when the most-recent 8h funding rate is >= +entry_threshold (crowded longs) it goes long to follow the move; when <= -entry_threshold (crowded shorts) it goes short. It exits when funding normalizes below exit_threshold or flips against the position, on a 5% protective stop, or after a 12-bar max-hold. Iteration 2 fixes the funding parser, which rejected the string-keyed timestamps delivered through the subprocess JSON round-trip (every key was discarded, so funding was always None and no trade ever fired). ~4 parameters; leverage 1.0.

Clean dense execution: 409 trades over 6.5 years, single-instrument USD-M, funding-as-signal-only, two-sided (255 long / 154 short), no exposure bug (avg_position 10.9%), low commission (3.5% of gross)
Marginally positive headline (PF 1.06) — better than the negative BTC/LINK/ETH siblings
Edge is not significant: Sharpe 0.22 with CI straddling 0 (-0.95 to +1.25), PF 1.06, CAGR 1.13%, probabilistic_sharpe 0.65
Entire positive total is one late-2024 XRP catalyst window (2024 +11.1%: Nov +9.8%, Dec +4.5%); negative in 2022/2023/2025 — a one-window artifact, not a generalizable funding edge
CAPACITY WALL: capacity_usd $2.82M with impact_cost_pct 18.83% — impact eats ~1/5 of gross; undeployable beyond toy scale
Built on the false 'SOL PF 1.30' premise (SOL momentum-follow was PF 0.93, abandoned); funding-as-direction family has failed across BTC/LINK/ETH/AVAX/DOGE
deployable (>$50M)
marginal but huge vs 1.1% CAGR
negative 3/7 years, carried by 2024
majority positive
Outcome Summary
Single-asset funding-extreme momentum-follow has no robust forward-price edge on any major — where the headline is even marginally positive (XRP), it is an idiosyncratic-catalyst single-window artifact sitting on a tiny-capacity, high-impact footprint, so the whole single-instrument funding-as-direction substrate is exhausted and effort should redirect to the credited negative-funding-carry basket or to backfilling multi-year OI/liquidations/options history.
On its second and final iteration the analyst issued an 'abandon' verdict at the pre-optimization backtest-review gate, so optimization, analysis, and risk review never ran: the marginal edge is a single-window 2024-catalyst artifact rather than a generalizable signal, the strategy is undeployable behind a $2.82M/18.8%-impact capacity wall, and the sleeve rested on the false 'SOL PF 1.30' premise (SOL was actually PF 0.93 and abandoned).
A long-short, single-instrument momentum-continuation strategy on XRPUSDT.BINANCE USD-M 4H perpetual futures that used the funding LEVEL as the primary trigger (signal only, never carry), going long on extreme-positive funding (crowded longs) and short on extreme-negative funding (crowded shorts) and exiting on funding normalization, pitched as a decorrelated third sleeve of a supposedly validated funding-extreme momentum-follow edge, with XRP chosen for idiosyncratic payments/regulatory catalysts that fire at different times than SOL and DOGE.
Over a dense, two-sided 409-trade sample (255 long / 154 short) in 6.5 years the headline was only marginally positive and not significant: total return +20.2%, CAGR 1.13%, Sharpe 0.22 with CI straddling zero (-0.95 to +1.25), profit factor 1.06, with the entire positive total carried by one late-2024 XRP catalyst window (2024 +11.1%) and negative in 2022/2023/2025; capacity was only $2.82M with impact_cost_pct 18.83%.
