SOL Binance USD-M Dual-Timeframe Momentum Confluence — Long-Short 4H Trend Aligned with the Daily Trend, Flat on Disagreement, ATR Trailing Exit (Single-Bar, 3-Parameter)
Outcome: Abandoned
SolBinanceDualTimeframeMomentumConfluenceLS
Outcome Summary
SolBinanceDualTimeframeMomentumConfluenceLS gave SOL's trend premise the fair ~5-year Binance test its abandoned Hyperliquid version never got, porting the proven confluence recipe to the strongest-trending liquid alt. The result was clean but modest: +152.2%, PF 1.37, 1.45% per trade, a 12.6% drawdown, low kurtosis, positive every year — yet Sharpe was just 0.79 with a CI barely off zero, it underperformed holding SOL (IR -0.73), and the edge was front-loaded into the 2023 up-leg with every other year weak. The analyst abandoned it at backtest review, noting the fair test answered the premise negatively and that a Sharpe-0.79 base sits below the deflated-Sharpe bar its ETH sibling had just failed terminally at a higher 1.30. It never reached optimization, analysis, or risk review.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-short, single-instrument, single-bar-type momentum-confluence trend follower on SOLUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perpetual, 4H bars. All reads come from the same 4H series: a fixed 12-bar fast EMA, a slow EMA at 12*ema_ratio, and a daily-horizon trend EMA of 120 4H bars (= 20 days). calculate_signal returns (EMA_fast - EMA_slow)/ATR14 every bar -- a continuous, volatility-scaled 4H momentum read. ENTRY only when the sign of that read agrees with the daily-horizon trend (close above/below the trend EMA); disagreement means FLAT. EXIT on a 3x-ATR trailing stop from the best close since entry or on the close crossing the trend EMA against the position. Sizing risks ~1.5% of equity at the trailing-stop distance (qty = equity*0.015/(3*ATR)), hard-capped at 25% of equity x 2x leverage. Three tunables: ema_ratio, trend_ema, trail_atr_mult.
Verification Results
Analyst/backtest_review: weigh the recent regime heavily — the OOS windows are in it and it is below the viability floor. Likely abandon or iterate rather than spending full optimization budget.
Recent-regime edge is BELOW the fee-viability floor — the dominant concern for the analyst, but not a code defect. The 365-day sandbox returns avg_trade_return_pct 0.084% (below the 0.15% floor), Sharpe 0.13, PF 1.07, and the developer's trailing-365-day replay is +0.06%/trade. The full-sample figure (+1.37%/trade, PF 1.52, kurtosis 11.8, top-3 11.3%) is a genuine distributed edge over 6 years — better than the net-losing LTC and choppy XRP/DOGE — but concentrated in 2021-2023 and faded to roughly flat in 2024-2026. The walk-forward OOS windows and 15-day holdout sit in exactly this sub-floor regime, so the OOS avg_trade_return_pct>=0.15% and OOS Sharpe>=0.5 gates are at high risk. NOT a structural fee-threshold violation (no sub-0.15% entry parameter; the ATR-trail design captures large moves, avg_win 2366 vs avg_loss 590), so it is an empirical faded-edge finding for BACKTEST_REVIEW.
For live deployment, persist _side/_extreme/_entry_atr or reconstruct from the actual open position rather than from the current signal.
should_exit() infers _side from the live signal sign on restart (_side==0) and re-seeds _entry_atr/_extreme from current values. Unreachable in backtest; only a live mid-position crash-restart risk.

Fair long-history test as intended: 482 trades over ~5y, return_kurtosis 5.31 (low, distributed — not an outlier mirage), positive every year, avg_trade_return_pct 1.45% (above fees)
On a plausibly-edge-bearing asset (SOL), decorrelated (beta 0.028)
Sharpe 0.79 with CI-low 0.116 (barely off zero) — below the family's demonstrated DSR-clearing bar (~1.5; only ADA 1.54 cleared); weaker than the abandoned BTC macro-gated (0.85) and ETH macro-gated (0.71)
Edge front-loaded into the 2023 SOL up-leg (+40.6%); every other year weak (2020 +1.0%, 2024 +1.2%, 2025 +9.0%, 2026 +4.7%); rolling_sharpe negative mid-2026
Underperforms buy-hold SOL: information_ratio -0.73, alpha only 0.093
Directional dual-TF family: the ETH sibling just failed the deflated-Sharpe gate terminally at a HIGHER optimized Sharpe (1.30)
Outcome Summary
Giving a strategy the fair, long-history test it was said to lack can conclusively answer the premise in the negative — SOL does carry a trend but it is front-loaded into one 2023 up-leg, leaving a Sharpe-0.79 edge that underperforms buy-and-hold and sits below the deflated-Sharpe bar that even higher-Sharpe siblings failed.
The analyst abandoned it at backtest review: this fair long-history test answered SOL's trend premise negatively — the edge is weak and regime-concentrated. Sharpe 0.79 sits below the family's demonstrated deflated-Sharpe-clearing bar (~1.5; only ADA at 1.54 cleared, while the ETH sibling optimized to 1.30 and still failed DSR terminally), it underperforms holding SOL, and a Sharpe-0.79 base will not clear the significance gates its higher-Sharpe siblings already failed.
A long-short, single-instrument dual-timeframe momentum-confluence trend follower on SOLUSDT.BINANCE USD-M 4H (3 parameters) that aligned a fast/slow EMA spread with a 20-day trend EMA — all from one bar series — going flat on disagreement and trailing winners with an ATR stop, giving SOL's trend premise the fair ~5-year Binance test its short-history Hyperliquid version never got.
The backtest (SOLUSDT.BINANCE 4H, 2151 data days from 2020-09) returned +152.2% over 482 trades with profit factor 1.37, avg_trade_return_pct 1.45%, max drawdown 12.6%, and a clean distributed profile (kurtosis 5.31, positive every year). But Sharpe was only 0.79 (CI-low 0.116, barely off zero), it underperformed buy-and-hold SOL (information ratio -0.73, alpha 0.093), and the edge was front-loaded into the 2023 up-leg (+40.6%) with every other year weak (2024 +1.2%, 2025 +9.0%, 2026 +4.7%).
