Jesse Community TradingView_RSI: Fixed-Default ATOM Spot 4H Translation

Outcome: Abandoned

AtomSpotTradingViewRsi

Outcome Summary

AtomSpotTradingViewRsi translated the MIT-licensed Jesse TradingView_RSI strategy with its source defaults frozen, on ATOMUSDT spot 4H bars. The platform chose the instrument and interval because the source named neither. On a reliable sample of 727 trades it lost money in calm, normal and stressed volatility regimes alike, with signal IC of 0.000, and was wiped out in March 2021. The analyst abandoned it at backtest review, before optimization, so later stages were never reached. The verdict covers only this ATOM 4H operationalization, not the Jesse strategy in general.

Hypothesis

Faithful translation of TradingView_RSI by Jesse community, MIT licensed. Trade ATOMUSDT.BINANCE_SPOT on completed 4-HOUR bars, long-only, without leverage. The source specifies neither instrument nor interval; these are platform experiment choices. Preserve RSI period 5, stop_loss multiplier 0.95, take_profit multiplier 1.1, and xparam 75. The declared RSI search range 10–30 excludes its default 5; retain 5 rather than silently correcting it. All source defaults are frozen, with no optimization or added filters. Starting capital is $100,000. Performance is unverified.

The explicit faithful-port request takes precedence over inventing a different mechanism to satisfy diversity quotas. Spot is appropriate because the source never shorts or requests leverage and is underrepresented at 10.9% versus the 15% target. ATOM avoids another BTC experiment; corpus_concentration is empty, so low ATOM usage cannot be asserted. Four-hour bars are a declared experimental choice intended to avoid fast-cadence fee drag. The single-symbol, long-only design remains overrepresented, and generic RSI risk remains material. Preserve the source despite those limitations; do not add hedges, basket selection, or alternative indicators.

negative_expectancy: the fixed-default TradingView_RSI port (RSI 5, entry when RSI crosses up through 35, exit when RSI crosses down through 75, 5% stop, 10% take-profit) on ATOMUSDT spot 4H bars loses money on a reliable 727-trade sample. Average trade return is -0.52% against the 0.25% spot fee floor, PF is 0.82, and the account was wiped out on 2021-03-24. The loss persists before costs (about -0.29% per trade), so it is not only fee drag. Optimization cannot help: the research contract freezes every parameter and leaves the tunable set empty. QA's concern from the sandbox (-0.505% average over 684 trades) is confirmed on the full history. This verdict covers only this ATOM 4H spot operationalization. The source names no instrument or interval; the platform chose ATOM and 4H. It does not judge the Jesse community strategy in general.

Implementation

Fixed-default TradingView_RSI translation for ATOMUSDT Binance spot on completed four-hour bars. Enters long when RSI(5) crosses above 35; exits when it crosses below 75 or 10. Venue-managed brackets place the stop at 95% and target at 110% of the entry signal price. Uses the available capital less the source fee reserve, with quantity floored to three decimals. No shorts, leverage, added filters, or optimization.

Preserves the source defaults, crossing inequalities, all-capital sizing and protective exit sequence. RSI uses close-price gains/losses with Wilder smoothing and an initial period-average seed; scalar state allows incremental updates and restart persistence. The platform forces market entry at the completed bar rather than Jesse's price-specified entry; bracket levels remain anchored to that bar's close. The 240-bar warmup follows the frozen research plan. The source sizing helper reserves three fee charges and floors quantity, as documented in [Jesse utils](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jesse-ai/jesse/master/jesse/utils.py). Full-capital sizing retains the source's approximately 5% capital risk at its stop despite generic smaller-risk guidance. Performance remains unverified. The requested outbox file could not be written because this session's filesystem is read-only; this response includes the exact task call_id.

Verification Results

Compare flat initialization followed by an upward or downward move against the source indicator and preserve its zero-gain/zero-loss convention.

The zero-loss branch returns RSI 100 even when average gain is also zero. Exact parity with Jesse's indicator for an entirely flat initialization was not established; this boundary can affect the first crossing after flat prices.

The sandbox reports -0.505% average net trade return across 684 closed positions and substantial modeled impact. These are advisory results; full-history evaluation must determine profitability.

The trades match the source logic. All 727 trades are long, there are no shorts, and leverage peaks at 0.995. Entries come when RSI(5) crosses up through 35. Exits come from the RSI(5) cross down through 75, the 5% stop and the 10% take-profit.

The sample is large and reliable: 727 closed trades, metrics_reliable=true, accounting_valid=true, and the input audit is clean.

Per-trade return is -0.52% against the BINANCE_SPOT floor of +0.25%, so it fails by about 0.77 percentage points. PF is 0.816 and expectancy is -$236 per trade.

Costs alone do not explain the loss. Commission ($56.6k) plus modeled impact ($74.5k) on $56.6M traded is about 0.23% of notional. Adding that back still leaves roughly -0.29% per trade before costs.

Compounding a -0.52% average over 727 trades gives about -98%, which matches the -100% total return and the account being wiped out on 2021-03-24. Annual returns were -68% in 2019 and -72% in 2020.

Payoff ratio is 1.18 (average win $2,575 vs average loss $2,178) with a 0.41 win rate. The RSI-75 exit cuts winners well before the 10% take-profit, while losers run to the 5% stop.

The wipeout is consistent across regimes: calm -63%, normal -100%, stressed -89%. Signal IC is 0.000 (rejected_no_information).

The positive arithmetic Sharpe (0.71) is an artifact of volatility drag at 368% annualized volatility (return skew 3.4). The compounded result is the honest number. The engine's sharpe_note flags that the two have opposite signs.

Outcome Summary

With RSI(5), the RSI-75 exit closed winners well before the 10% take-profit while losers ran to the 5% stop, so the edge was negative before fees; check payoff asymmetry and gross edge before committing to a frozen-parameter port.

The backtest-review analyst voted to abandon for negative expectancy: the average trade return of -0.52% was far below the 0.25% spot floor, and the loss stayed at about -0.29% per trade even before costs. Optimization could not help because the research contract froze every parameter.

A faithful fixed-default port of the Jesse community TradingView_RSI strategy on ATOMUSDT spot 4H bars, long-only and unleveraged: enter when RSI(5) crosses up through 35, exit when it crosses down through 75, with a 5% stop-loss and 10% take-profit, and no optimization.

Over 727 long trades from June 2019, it returned -100% and the account was wiped out on 2021-03-24, with an average trade return of -0.52%, profit factor 0.82 and a 0.41 win rate. The arithmetic Sharpe of 0.71 has the opposite sign to the compounded return, and the review treated it as a volatility artifact (368% annualized volatility).
