XRP 4H Two-Bar Momentum Continuation Long-Only (BINANCE USD-M Futures, 4H, OHLCV-Only, Simple 2-Bar Momentum Mechanism)
Outcome: Abandoned
XrpFourHourTwoBarMomentumContinuationLong
Outcome Summary
XrpFourHourTwoBarMomentumContinuationLong was a deliberately bare-bones bet — just two adjacent bars, five parameters, no rolling state — engineered to minimize the implementation surface where the developer's recurring 8H/12H translation bugs had caused repeated Layer-3 failures. The data-safety design worked (845 clean trades on the proven XRP 4H path), but the strategy failed on two independent fronts: the 2-bar green-continuation carried almost no predictive information (profit_factor 0.991, negative expectancy, with the +11.1% headline being purely unrealized mark-to-market), and firing it 845 times drove modeled market impact to 162% of gross PnL at a toy $38k capacity. The analyst abandoned it at backtest review without optimizing — neither a missing edge nor a structural impact-exceeds-gross problem is a tunable knob. It stands as the session's clearest reminder that minimizing complexity is orthogonal to having an edge: a simple specification with no signal, traded at high frequency, is a transaction-cost catastrophe, not a clean momentum baseline.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Ultra-minimal long-only 2-bar momentum continuation on XRPUSDT.BINANCE USD-M futures 4H bars, OHLCV-only. It examines only two adjacent bars: it enters long when the PRIOR bar was green (close>open) AND the CURRENT bar prints a strong green body (>= 1.0% of price) that closes in the upper 80% of its own high-low range. No rolling windows, SMA, ATR, streak counter, or state machine — the only carried state is a single boolean (was the prior bar green). Exits on a 3% take-profit, a 2% stop-loss, or a 12-bar (~2 day) time stop. calculate_signal returns the current bar's signed body percent continuously; the binary 2-bar trigger is captured in an _armed flag checked by should_enter. Sizes 30% of equity per trade, capped by 1.5% risk over the 2% stop.

Implemented correctly and trades as designed: 845 long-only 2-bar continuation entries, clean entry_diag (845 signaled = 845 submitted, 0 dropped), metrics_reliable=true; minimal 5-parameter surface as intended
Catastrophic cost economics: impact_cost_pct 162.66% (impact EXCEEDS gross PnL) and capacity_usd just $37,795 (toy scale, undeployable)
No realized edge: profit_factor 0.991 (<1), expectancy -6.72 (negative), Sharpe -0.084; the +11.1% total_return is entirely open-position unrealized (end_unrealized_pct 16.78)
Recent decay: 2023 -6.8%, 2024 -11.3%, 2025 -5.2%; win_rate 0.424, Sharpe CI centered negative (-1.03 to 0.74)

Outcome Summary
Ultra-minimal high-frequency 2-bar momentum-continuation on a single major has no per-trade edge and fires too often — the tiny/negative gross edge is annihilated by market impact (162% of gross) at near-zero capacity ($38k) — so simplicity for its own sake produces a fee/impact-dominated non-edge rather than a baseline workable signal, and a positive total return that is entirely unrealized MTM is not evidence of a realized edge.
The analyst issued an abandon verdict at backtest review on a double-decisive basis: there is no per-trade edge (sub-1 profit factor, negative expectancy, negative Sharpe, headline return entirely unrealized) AND the trading-cost economics are unfixable (impact 162% of gross, $38k capacity) — both structural consequences of signal-weakness × high frequency that no parameter can tune away, so the premise itself is the flaw and there is nothing to iterate.
An ultra-minimal long-only 2-bar momentum-continuation on XRPUSDT.BINANCE 4H (5 parameters, no rolling windows/SMA/ATR/state machine): enter long when the prior bar was green AND the current bar prints a strong green body (≥1.0% of price) closing in the upper 80% of its own range, exiting on a fixed take-profit, stop, or 12-bar time stop — deliberately simple to minimize the implementation surface and stay on the proven XRP 4H data path.
It traded as designed with a large sample — 845 long entries, clean entry diagnostics, metrics_reliable=true — but had no realized edge and catastrophic cost economics: profit_factor 0.991, expectancy −6.72, Sharpe −0.084, win_rate 42.4%, and the +11.1% total return was entirely open-position unrealized MTM (end_unrealized_pct 16.78). Most decisively, impact_cost_pct was 162.66% (modeled impact exceeded gross PnL) with capacity_usd just $37,795, and 3 of the last 4 years were negative (2023 −6.8%, 2024 −11.3%, 2025 −5.2%).
