ADA 4H Donchian Channel Breakout Long (20/10 Turtle-Style)
Outcome: Abandoned
AdaDonchian2010TurtleBreakoutLong4H
Outcome Summary
AdaDonchian2010TurtleBreakoutLong4H applied the canonical Turtle 20/10 Donchian breakout to ADA on the proven 4H/Binance path, kept maximally simple at two parameters to dodge the session's overfitting and supplementary-data failures. Execution was clean, but the edge was thin and decaying: Sharpe 0.38 with a deeply 0-straddling CI, profit factor 1.08, a 41.6% drawdown, a headline ~61% unrealized and carried by a few mania days, and two negative recent years — mostly bull-beta with low capacity. The reviewer abandoned it pre-optimization as the weakest of four ADA 4H breakout variants in the batch, noting that the filtered siblings (Two-Bar-HH, Sequential-HL, Donchian+trend) all add the directional-context structure it lacks and strictly dominate it. The conclusion was to retire this inferior, redundant duplicate so the optimization budget flows to the stronger, filtered variants.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-only single-instrument Turtle-style Donchian channel breakout on ADAUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perpetual, 4-hour bars, pure OHLCV. Enters long when the close breaks above the highest high of the prior entry_channel (20) bars and exits when the close breaks below the lowest low of the prior exit_channel (10) bars (channel boundaries computed excluding the current bar to avoid self-comparison bias). The exit channel is the primary risk control — winners are uncapped (no take-profit) so trends run — with a single wide 8% hard stop as a gap-crash safeguard only. Exactly two edge parameters (entry_channel, exit_channel). Position sizes a fixed fraction of equity using the instrument's native size precision. Leverage 1.0.

Clean execution, long-only as designed (169/169 submitted, no artifacts), adequate sample, classic robust mechanism, OHLCV-only on the proven ADA-4H path
Positive in bull years (2020 +45%, 2021 +28%, 2023 +32%)
Weak edge: Sharpe 0.38, profit_factor 1.08, sharpe_ci_low -0.82 (deeply straddles 0), max_drawdown 41.6%
Recent-year collapse: 2025 -20.7%, 2026 -13.7% — edge decayed; mostly bull-beta (beta 0.25, corr 0.69, alpha +0.033)
Headline ~61% unrealized (end_unrealized_pct 93.97 of 153% total) — realized track record is weak; extreme outlier dependence (skew 9.58, kurtosis 137.7); impact 23.3%, capacity only $1.84M
Redundant and inferior: weakest of 4 ADA 4H breakout variants in this batch — Donchian+trend (0.65), Two-Bar-HH (1.19), Sequential-HL (1.97) all add the structural filter this one lacks and are strictly better
non-negative
Outcome Summary
A plain N/N Donchian breakout without a directional-context filter is the weakest member of the ADA 4H breakout family — the trend/sequence confirmation (rising SMA or two-bar HH/LL) is what makes those breakouts viable — so an unfiltered version is both weak and redundant, and the optimization budget belongs to the stronger filtered siblings.
The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate, before optimization, as both weak and redundant: its weak-Sharpe / 0-straddling-CI / deep-drawdown / negative-recent-years profile is the shape that repeatedly fails the deflated-Sharpe gate, and the only sensible fix — adding a trend/sequence filter — would recreate already-existing, strictly-better ADA 4H breakout siblings (Donchian+trend 0.65, Two-Bar-HH 1.19, Sequential-HL 1.97).
A long-only, single-instrument, pure-OHLCV classic Turtle-style 20/10 Donchian channel breakout on ADAUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perp at 4H — buying fresh 20-bar-high breakouts and exiting on 10-bar-low breakdowns with a wide gap-crash stop — deliberately kept to 2 core parameters on the proven 4H/Binance combo and a fresh symbol (ADA) to resist overfitting and supplementary-data walls.
It showed a weak, bull-beta edge: +153% headline (but ~61% unrealized, so realized ~59% over 6 years) at Sharpe 0.38, profit factor 1.08, sharpe_ci_low -0.82, 34.9% win rate over 169 trades, 41.6% max drawdown, heavy outlier dependence (kurtosis 137.7), low capacity ($1.84M), 23.3% impact, and a recent-year collapse (2025 -20.7%, 2026 -13.7%).
