HYPE Native Spot Demand Shock, Perpetual Follow-Through
Outcome: Paper Trading
HypeSpotDemandShockPerpFollowThrough
Outcome Summary
This strategy tested whether sharp, high-volume rallies in HYPE's native Hyperliquid spot market predict further gains in the HYPE perpetual over the next ~16 hours. Over 5 iterations it reached a 499-day backtest with +34.4% return, Sharpe 2.24, 6.7% max drawdown and a 1.04% average trade return across 153 trades, with positive Sharpe in calm, normal and stressed regimes and very low beta. Both the pooled OOS (Sharpe 1.67, t=1.49) and the holdout (Sharpe 2.48, t=1.18) were positive but not significant, and about 61% of net PnL came from the top 10 trades. The analyst recommended promotion and the strategy is now in paper trading on its baseline parameters.
Hypothesis
Trade the HYPE perpetual when a large price and volume advance in Hyperliquid's native HYPE spot market signals demand for the token. Local 4-hour bars cover both exact instruments. An exploratory screen from May 2025 through September 2026 found 211 qualifying bars; the perp rose an average 1.33% over the following 16 hours, compared with 0.30% unconditionally. This is in-sample evidence, not a validated strategy result. Hyperliquid's spot and perp fee schedules are documented at https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/fees.
Implementation
Buys the HYPE perpetual when its aligned four-hour spot bar advances at least 1.5% on elevated volume; exits on the existing stop, take-profit, or time rule.
Preserves the passing signal, sizing, 3% stop, and 4% take-profit logic. Declared bounds cover the requested volume region and 12–20-hour holding region; the pipeline still needs to test the specified discrete settings and repeat OOS, holdout, and deflation checks. The saved 122-trade ledger and equity curve agree to $0.01, but published daily returns compound to about 9.76% versus the equity curve’s 11.69%. That reporting discrepancy remains unresolved. The required outbox file could not be written because this workspace is read-only.

Use a protective stop order if the 3% level is intended to apply intrabar.
The 3% stop is checked only at four-hour bar closes, so an intrabar decline can exceed that level.

The reconciliation defect from iteration 2 appears fixed. accounting_valid is true, daily compounded growth reconciles to ending equity, and 2026-04-17 now reports a 0.0% return. 13 days with no trade entry or exit still show returns of about -0.008%. That is economically immaterial, probably carry on a held position.
153 trades are long-only on the HYPE perpetual, triggered when the spot bar's timestamp matches the perp bar's. Holds average 11h41m. This matches the hypothesis (a spot demand shock followed by perp follow-through).
Economics: average trade return is 1.04% of notional, about 7x the 0.15% Hyperliquid floor. Median trade return is 1.22%, profit factor 1.65 and win rate 0.59. Commissions take 3.8% of gross and impact 5.8%. Fees are not the constraint.
This is not beta. The strategy drew down 6.7% against 68.9% for HYPE buy-and-hold. Beta is 0.04, exposure is 15% and alpha is 0.16 per year. Buy-and-hold returned +224% against +34% here, which is expected at 15% time in market.
Returns are positive in every volatility regime (stressed-regime Sharpe 1.40) and in every calendar year. Per-trade means are 3.71% in 2024 (7 trades), 0.91% in 2025 and 0.95% in 2026, so 2024 is not carrying the result.
The history is short, 499 days on one token, and the hypothesis's own screen is in-sample over an overlapping window. The 95% Sharpe confidence interval runs from 0.54 to 3.79.
Stops are checked only at the 4-hour bar close, so realised losses reach -9.1% against a 3% stop. Excursions against the position (MAE) reach about -9%. The gap risk is real and should be kept in mind.
The signal_research IC is -0.064, but that diagnostic forecasts the next single bar (horizon 1) from position state. It does not test a 16-hour follow-through, so it is not evidence against the premise.
The parameters are hard-clamped in code to the narrow region chosen in iteration 1 (volume_lookback 25-40, min_volume_multiple 1.25-1.35, hold_hours 12-20). The optimizer cannot test outside it, and the region was chosen after the earlier result was seen, so it carries some selection risk.
Analysis
No hard or soft numeric failures. 153 long-only HYPE perp trades, avg_trade_return_pct 1.04% vs the 0.18% gate (HYPERLIQUID review floor 0.15%), PF 1.65, win rate 0.59, payoff 1.16, max DD 6.7% vs the pre-registered 20%, Calmar 3.6, commission 3.8% of gross, impact 5.8% of gross, capacity about $30M.
The trades match the mechanism: all LONG on the perp after a spot bar with an advance of at least 1.5% on at least 1.3x volume, held about 12h on average. All 3 measurable pre-registered predictions were met (trades 153 >= 90, DD 6.7 <= 20, avg 1.04 >= 0.30).
This is not beta. Beta is 0.04 and annual alpha is 0.16. The equal-weight HYPE spot/perp benchmark returned +224% with a 68.9% drawdown. The strategy returned +34.4% with a 6.7% drawdown (0.10x the benchmark DD, so does not apply), at 15% time in market and about 20% average notional. Exposure-scaled buy-and-hold would be single-digit. The IR of -1.16 is against raw buy-and-hold, which is not the relevant comparison for a 3%-average-notional book.
Out-of-sample evidence is positive in both scopes. Pooled outer OOS Sharpe is 1.67 (HAC t=1.49, 1689 4h obs). The holdout (last ~99 days to 2026-04-17) is positive at Sharpe 2.48 (t=1.18, PSR 0.88), consistent with and above OOS. 6 of 9 outer windows are positive (5.0, 3.4, 0.19, 6.6, 2.2, 0.07, -2.2, -0.09, 2.3).
Regime-robust: Sharpe is positive in calm (3.46), normal (2.00) and stressed (1.40) terciles, and in the 2025 tariff-shock window. end_unrealized_pct is 0, so the result is fully realized and funding is credited.
Statistical significance is not established. Pooled OOS t is 1.49 and holdout t is 1.18, both below the 2.0 hurdle. The pooled DSR is undefined because only one defined OOS variant exists; the legacy variant has no series. History is short, about 16 months of HYPE.
The hold_hours cliff flag is a discretization artifact of 4h bars, not a real fragility. 14h and 16h give identical results; 18h rounds to a 20h exit and Sharpe drops to 1.41, which is still positive. The other two parameters show no cliffs (1.70 to 2.26). Inner PBO diagnostics are high (0.23 to 0.88), so the parameter choice within the narrow box is noise. That is acceptable because the box is narrow and the edge is flat across it.
Profit is concentrated: the top 10 of 153 trades carry about 61% of net PnL, and the 4% take-profit caps each win. Edge depends on a few strong follow-through events. There is a 131-day max DD duration, and Oct-Nov 2025 and Mar 2026 lost money.
The executed-signal IC (-0.064 at a 1-bar horizon) is a position-state-dependent diagnostic at the wrong horizon for a 12-16h hold. It is flagged advisory only and does not contradict the trade-level PnL.
Optimized parameters were not accepted (accepted_optimized_parameters=false), so the frozen baseline (hold 16h, lookback 30, volume multiple 1.3) is the candidate.

PAPER ONLY, labelled 'low confidence: not statistically proven'. Incubate at reduced allocation, about 25-50% of the standard inverse-vol weight. Use the frozen baseline parameters: hold_hours 16, volume_lookback 30, min_volume_multiple 1.3, plus contract-fixed risk_pct 0.01, SL 3%, TP 4%, max_exposure 0.5. At about 0.3 signals/day, paper should accumulate about 50 trades in 5-6 months. Re-evaluate on new forward data, not on the same holdout. Retirement tripwires: forward PF < 1.1 after 40 trades, or DD > 12% (about 2x backtest). Operational check: confirm the live feed delivers spot and perp 4h bars with identical close stamps, because the signal returns 0 on any timestamp mismatch.
Risk Review
Position size exceeds position_limits.max_position_pct (20%). Sizing is risk_pct / stop = 0.01 / 0.03, about 33% of equity in notional; the max_exposure_pct cap of 0.5 never binds. Measured peak_entry_leverage is 0.333 and peak margin utilisation is 0.333, against the 20% limit. avg_position_pct is 19.7%, so the median trade sits right at the limit.
The stop is checked only at the close of each 4h bar; no resting stop order is placed. The declared 3% stop gave realised losses of -9.07% (2025-01-19), -7.99%, -7.03%, -6.60% and -6.31%. Intrabar MAE reached -24.1% (2024-12-20). At about 33% notional the worst trade cost 1.8% of equity (-$4,647), which is tolerable at 1x but means the effective stop is not 3%. This was also flagged by QA (line 67).
Statistical evidence is low confidence. Pooled OOS t=1.49 and holdout t=1.18 are both below the 2.0 hurdle. deflated_sharpe is UNEVALUATED (missing from the metrics), so treat it as unknown, not passed. optimization_report is null in this brief and final_exam is null, so the locked out-of-sample window has not been run or was not supplied. I cannot weigh untouched evidence. Only about 16 months of HYPE history exist.
The executed-path signal diagnostic shows IC -0.064 (t=-3.48) at a 1-bar horizon. That is a significant negative 4h-ahead relationship. It is advisory: it depends on position state and uses the wrong horizon for a 12-16h hold. It is not blocking, but if real it suggests entries often catch the end of the spot bar's move. Watch the first-bar return of paper entries.
Profit is concentrated: the top 10 of 153 trades carry about 61% of net PnL. Max drawdown lasted 131 days (Oct-Nov 2025). Max drawdown is 6.7% at 1x leverage (peak 0.36x mark-to-market), against the pre-registered 20% and the 15% strategy limit. The drawdown builds gradually across many trades rather than in a single cliff.
Leverage is 1.0, within capital.max_leverage 3.0. stop_loss_pct 3.0 is within capital.max_stop_loss_pct 5.0. A stop and take-profit are implemented in should_exit, along with a time exit at 16h.
Correlation and live book: there is no other HYPE single-name strategy. HyperliquidCrossSectionalRelativeStrengthRotationLS (paper, size 0.5) and HyperliquidDonchianBreakoutTrendLSBasketDaily (live) may hold HYPE, so check combined HYPE exposure against max_correlated_exposure_pct 40%. live_book is readable, with 0 members in breach and no open_items. Replay divergence on SolHlActivitySurgeExhaustionFade, BtcDualTimeframeMomentumConfluenceLS and BtcMacroConfirmedMomentumLS is noted but unrelated.
Market impact is acceptable. About $87k notional per trade on $260k equity (reported capacity is about $30M). Impact is 5.8% of gross and commission 3.8% of gross. avg_trade_return_pct is 1.04%, well above the 0.15% floor.
Cap per-trade notional at max_position_pct 20%: set max_exposure_pct to 0.20, or reduce risk_pct to 0.006, before paper.
Paper admission carries the low-confidence label ('not statistically proven'). No real-money promotion until a final exam on the locked OOS window has been taken and reviewed.
In paper/live, place a protective stop_market order at entry -3% (or a hard intrabar stop of no more than 5%), rather than relying only on the bar-close check.

Outcome Summary
A strong per-trade edge on a short single-token history can still fall short of statistical significance, and checking stops only at the 4-hour close let losses reach -9.1% against a 3% stop, so intrabar stops and a longer record matter.
After 5 iterations, backtest review chose 'optimize' and the analyst chose 'promote', noting no hard or soft numeric failures. Significance was inconclusive because both OOS t-stats were below 2.0 and the DSR could not be computed, so the strategy reached paper trading on the frozen baseline parameters rather than on optimized ones.
Go long the Hyperliquid HYPE perpetual for about 16 hours after a 4-hour bar in Hyperliquid's native HYPE spot market rises at least 1.5% on at least 1.3x its 30-bar average volume, on the view that spot demand shocks are followed by perp follow-through.
The backtest ran 499 days (2024-12-05 to 2026-04-17) and returned +34.4% net over 153 long-only trades, with Sharpe 2.24 (95% CI 0.54 to 3.79), max drawdown 6.7%, profit factor 1.65, win rate 0.59, an average trade return of 1.04% of notional and beta 0.04. Out of sample, the pooled OOS Sharpe was 1.67 (HAC t=1.49) and the holdout Sharpe was 2.48 (t=1.18).
Backtest and paper results are hypothetical. Trading involves risk of loss.
