AvaxFourHourVolumeBreakoutLong
Hypotheses
AVAX Four-Hour Volume Breakout Long-Only (BINANCE USD-M Futures, 4H, OHLCV-Only)
Hypotheses
Long-only AVAX 4-hour strategy on BINANCE USD-M futures. Direct analog of the already-landed BtcFourHourVolumeBreakoutLong + EthFourHourVolumeBreakoutLong + BnbFourHourVolumeBreakoutLong + SolFourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family — applied to AVAX. Pivoting to 4H instead of daily bypasses the persistent daily-bar audit refill issues that have wiped out the last 8+ daily hypothesis attempts. Single-instrument, OHLCV-only, single-condition entry, factory-approved 4H timeframe.
Hypotheses
Direct AVAX analog of the already-landed Btc/Eth/Bnb/Sol FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family: a single-condition long-only volume breakout on the factory-approved 4H timeframe, which sidesteps the recurring daily-bar audit refill failures. It reuses the proven template shape so it should track the family's behaviour: calculate_signal returns the continuous, bar-varying Donchian breakout margin so the verifier sees real signal variation, while the discrete price-break-AND-above-average-volume boolean gates should_enter and position_size (avoiding the gated-to-0.0 anti-pattern). Exits combine an ATR stop/target, a percentage take-profit, a lower-channel reclaim, and a time stop. Venue AVAXUSDT.BINANCE USD-M 4H matches the family and is a liquid, currently-listed contract with multi-year history; futures RT taker (~0.10%) is cheaper than spot. Long-only with leverage left at 1.0 (no amplification used) so the leverage_set_but_unused gate does not trigger, and the ATR/6% targets keep expected per-trade edge above the ~0.10% round-trip fee.
Hypotheses
Encouraging walk-forward that fails the decisive forward and multiple-testing gates on a front-loaded, decaying edge — the marginal arm of the volume-breakout family, exactly as flagged at pre-optimization. The optimizer produced a clean-looking in-sample/walk-forward profile (Sharpe 2.10, PF 1.58, max_DD 7.8%, is_overfitted=FALSE, all 3 OOS positive avg 1.40, PBO 0.3942, sharpe_ci_low +0.31, PSR 0.9913), but the gates that test generalization reject it: deflated_sharpe 0.0618 (is_significant FALSE) with the optimized Sharpe 2.10 BELOW the expected-max luck bar 3.47 over 225 trials — after honest multiple-testing correction the edge is indistinguishable from best-of-225 selection; the HOLDOUT FAILED with a deeply NEGATIVE Sharpe -3.78 (ratio -2.7) — the recent one-shot forward window loses money badly; and sensitivity FAILED with 4 cliffs (vol_mult, atr_mult_sl, tp_pct_fallback, breakout_lookback). The pre-optimization front-loading/decay materialized: optimized annual returns are concentrated in 2021 (+26.3%) and fade to 2026 -4.2% with rolling Sharpe negative by 2026, which is why the recent holdout collapses. Not promote: DSR below the luck bar + a deeply negative holdout + 4 cliffs are each disqualifying; the passing PBO and positive CI lower are in-sample best-of-225 selection, not forward evidence. Not iterate (attempt 1 of 2): the failure is a front-loaded/decaying edge + sub-luck-bar deflation + a negative holdout + 4 core-param cliffs, not a robust region the sweep under-explored, so a second sweep re-finds the same 2021-concentrated config that fails the 2026 holdout. Not revise_hypothesis: the volume-breakout mechanism is already validated and landed on the liquid majors (BTC/ETH/BNB/SOL); AVAX is the marginal arm of the family's asset-selectivity. FAILURE PATTERN: the FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family does not generalize robustly to the lower-liquidity AVAX arm — the optimizer produces a flashy Sharpe 2.10 with a clean NON-overfit positive walk-forward (avg OOS 1.40, PBO 0.39), yet fails deflated Sharpe (0.06, below the 3.47 luck bar), a deeply negative holdout (-3.78), and sensitivity with 4 core-param cliffs because the edge is front-loaded into 2021 and decaying by 2026. This is the identical signature to the abandoned ADA volume-confirmed Donchian (DSR 0.13, holdout -3.63) and DOT volume-breakout siblings: a positive walk-forward with a negative holdout and sub-luck-bar DSR is an edge fit to historical bull regimes, not a deployable one.
Implementation
Long-only 4H volume breakout on AVAXUSDT.BINANCE USD-M futures, pure OHLCV single feed. Enters LONG when price closes above the prior 20-bar high AND the breakout bar's volume is at least 1.5x the trailing 20-bar average (above-average volume confirmation). Exits on a 1.5x ATR stop, a 3x ATR target, a 6% take-profit fallback, a lower-channel reclaim (close below the prior 10-bar low), or a 30-bar time stop. The signal is the continuous breakout margin (close/prior_high - 1) recomputed every bar; the volume-confirmed breakout is the discrete entry gate. Sized at 20% equity notional, capped so ATR-stop risk <= 1.5% of equity. leverage 1.0.
Backtest Review
Proven family mechanism (landed BTC/ETH/BNB/SOL FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong), implemented correctly: 198 volume-confirmed breakout entries, 0 dropped, all long
Backtest Review
Healthy sample (~35/yr) and net-positive with a fee-viable per-trade edge (expectancy $59, ~0.3% per trade, above the 0.15% futures floor); low max_drawdown 13.2%
Backtest Review
Razor-thin edge: profit_factor 1.084, Sharpe 0.40 (CI -1.02 to 1.82 straddles 0), win_rate 45%
Backtest Review
2023-concentrated: +15.7% total is dominated by 2023 (+21.6%); 2022/2025/2026 negative, rolling Sharpe to ~-2.8 by 2026 (recent decay)
Backtest Review
Modest capacity (~$4.6M, impact 14.7%) — lower headroom than the major-asset siblings
Backtest Review
Thin/marginal arm of the family: the stronger ADA volume-breakout (PF 1.215) already failed post-optimization on deflated Sharpe + a negative holdout, so AVAX faces the same forward-validation risk
Analysis
Walk-forward is_overfitted=FALSE with all 3 OOS windows positive (avg 1.40), PBO 0.3942 (<0.5), sharpe_ci_low +0.31 (positive), PSR 0.9913
Analysis
Optimized config clean in isolation: Sharpe 2.10, PF 1.58, Sortino 3.46, max_drawdown 7.8%, win 56%, large capacity (~$150M), low impact (2.6%)
Analysis
Proven family mechanism (volume breakout landed on BTC/ETH/BNB/SOL), implemented correctly
Analysis
Failed deflated Sharpe: DSR=0.0618 (bar 0.95) with the optimized Sharpe 2.10 BELOW the expected-max luck bar 3.47 over 225 trials — indistinguishable from best-of-N selection
Analysis
Holdout FAILED with a deeply NEGATIVE Sharpe -3.78 (ratio -2.7): the recent one-shot forward window loses money badly
Analysis
Sensitivity FAILED with 4 cliffs (vol_mult, atr_mult_sl, tp_pct_fallback, breakout_lookback)
Analysis
Front-loaded and decaying (flagged at pre-opt): optimized annual returns 2021 +26.3% fading to 2026 -4.2%, rolling Sharpe negative by 2026
Analysis
Identical failure signature to the abandoned ADA volume-confirmed Donchian sibling (DSR 0.13, holdout -3.63) — AVAX is the marginal arm of the family
Outcome Summary
This strategy ported the validated 4H volume-breakout mechanism from the liquid majors to AVAX, and the thin but net-positive base (198 trades, +15.7%, PF 1.08) earned an 'optimize' verdict despite flagged 2023-concentration and modest capacity. Optimization produced a flashy, clean-looking profile — Sharpe 2.10, PF 1.58, and a genuinely non-overfit walk-forward with all three OOS windows positive and PBO 0.39. But the forward and multiple-testing gates rejected it: deflated Sharpe 0.06 below the luck bar, a deeply negative holdout of -3.78, and four core-parameter sensitivity cliffs, all tracing back to an edge front-loaded into 2021 and decaying by 2026. The analyst abandoned it on iteration 1 as the marginal, asset-selective arm of a family already landed on the majors — concluding the passing walk-forward was in-sample best-of-225 selection, not forward evidence.
Outcome Summary
A positive, non-overfit walk-forward paired with a negative holdout and a sub-luck-bar deflated Sharpe is an edge fit to historical bull regimes, not a deployable one — the volume-breakout family does not generalize to the lower-liquidity AVAX arm, the identical signature as the abandoned ADA volume-confirmed Donchian (DSR 0.13, holdout -3.63) and DOT siblings.
Outcome Summary
Despite the encouraging walk-forward, the post-optimization analyst abandoned it on the decisive generalization gates: deflated Sharpe 0.0618 (optimized Sharpe 2.10 below the 3.47 expected-max luck bar, not significant), a deeply negative one-shot holdout (Sharpe -3.78, ratio -2.7), and a failed sensitivity test with 4 cliffs — all symptoms of a 2021-concentrated edge decaying to 2026 -4.2%, with iteration ruled out because a second sweep would re-find the same front-loaded config.
Outcome Summary
A long-only volume-confirmed channel breakout on AVAXUSDT 4H perpetual futures (pure OHLCV), a direct analog of the landed BTC/ETH/BNB/SOL FourHourVolumeBreakoutLong family — entering long when price closed above the prior 20-bar high on volume ≥1.5x the 20-bar average, exiting on ATR stop/target, a percentage take-profit fallback, a lower-channel reclaim, or a time stop.
Outcome Summary
The base backtest was net-positive but razor-thin — 198 trades (~35/year, all long, none dropped), +15.7% total, Sharpe 0.40 (CI -1.02 to 1.82), profit factor 1.084, expectancy +$59/trade (~0.3%), 13.2% max drawdown, ~$4.6M capacity at 14.7% impact — and 2023-concentrated; optimization produced a clean-looking config (Sharpe 2.10, PF 1.58, Sortino 3.46, 7.8% drawdown, win 56%, ~$150M capacity) with a non-overfit walk-forward (avg OOS 1.40, PBO 0.39, sharpe_ci_low +0.31).
