SOL Perp Funding-Confirmed Trend (Single-Instrument USD-M, Long-Short, Daily, Carry-Momentum Confluence, Flat on Disagreement)
Outcome: Abandoned
SolFundingConfirmedTrendLS
Outcome Summary
SolFundingConfirmedTrendLS extended the factory's one promoted survivor — the ETH daily funding-confirmed trend — onto higher-beta SOL, deliberately choosing funding over OI/taker-flow to dodge the data wall and relying on the AND-gate plus flat-on-disagreement discipline to filter the whipsaws that kill naked trend systems. The backtest's surface metrics were attractive (+142.9% total, profit factor 1.45, huge capacity), but the analyst showed they were a 2021-mania artifact: a return kurtosis of 356, several physically-implausible single-day prints that cannot come from 15% sizing on SOL price alone, the entire edge in 2021 with a -28.6% 2022, and a Sharpe of 0.54 with its CI through zero. The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate on its second iteration, judging it materially worse than the BNB sibling that advanced and certain to fail the deflated-Sharpe gate. The recorded conclusion was that the ETH-validated confluence gate is asset-selective and that higher beta amplified tail-dependence rather than producing a robust, transferable edge.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-short single-instrument funding-confirmed daily trend on SOLUSDT.BINANCE USD-M perpetual futures. It takes a position only when the price trend (sign of the trend_lookback-day return) and the funding rate (sign of the mean funding over funding_lookback days, beyond a deadband) agree in direction, and stays flat on disagreement; it exits when agreement breaks or a 10% stop hits. Funding is used purely as a directional signal (never booked as cash flow). A conservative transfer of the promoted ETH Daily Funding-Confirmed Trend onto a higher-beta major. Three tunable parameters: trend_lookback, funding_lookback, funding_deadband.

Validated confluence mechanism (promoted ETH sibling), correct funding-only signal (avoids the OI/L-S data wall), dense two-sided trades (95L/83S), huge capacity ($481M), trivial fees (1.6% of gross)
Profit factor 1.45 and a positive 2024 (+25.9%) show the gate does fire correctly in some windows
return_kurtosis 356 — the +142.9% total is dominated by ~3 implausibly-large single-day returns (+49.1%, +41.8%, +29.5%) that cannot be reconciled with 15% position sizing (suspected artifact / multi-day PnL attribution; not independently verified)
Entire edge is 2021 (+148.5%, > the total); negative in 4 of 7 years including 2022 -28.6%; strip 2021 and it's net-negative aside from an outlier-influenced 2024
Sharpe 0.54 with CI straddling 0 (-0.36 to +1.06), max DD 37.6%, end_unrealized_pct 32.8% (a third of headline is open MTM)
Materially worse than the BNB sibling (kurtosis 2x, drawdown 3.6x, a -28.6% year) — higher beta amplified tail-dependence; the kurtosis-356 profile will fail the deflated-Sharpe gate (PSR 0.96 / DSR-fail split)
nominal only
<~20 (not outlier-carried)
negative 4/7 years; entire edge in 2021
majority positive
reconcilable with 15% sizing
Outcome Summary
Transferring a confluence-gated trend mechanism onto a higher-beta major does not preserve the edge — it concentrates returns into a few 2021 mania days (kurtosis >300, implausible single-day prints, CI-through-zero Sharpe, a losing 2022), so the ETH-validated funding-confluence gate is asset-selective and does not robustly survive the tail-heavy members of the beta spectrum; an outlier-carried headline with a third of returns in open MTM is a luck artifact, not a deployable edge.
On its second and final iteration the analyst issued an 'abandon' verdict at the pre-optimization backtest-review gate, so optimization, analysis, and risk review never ran: the confluence mechanism transferred to higher-beta SOL only as extreme-tail 2021-mania capture, not a robust edge, and the kurtosis-356 profile (a classic PSR-0.96 / DSR-fail split) guarantees the deflated-Sharpe gate would reject it — materially worse than the BNB sibling that was cleared to optimize.
A long-short, single-instrument directional strategy on SOLUSDT.BINANCE USD-M daily perpetual futures that took a position ONLY when the price trend and the funding rate AGREED in direction (long on up-trend + positive funding, short on down-trend + negative funding) and stayed FLAT on disagreement — a conservative transfer of the factory's one promoted survivor (ETH Daily Funding-Confirmed Trend, Sharpe 2.74) onto a higher-beta major, with funding as a directional signal only.
Headline numbers looked strong over 178 two-sided trades (95L/83S) — total return +142.9%, profit factor 1.45, $481M capacity, trivial fees — but they were outlier-carried: return kurtosis 356 with skew 17.4 and implausibly-large single days (+49.1%, +41.8%, +29.5%) that cannot be reconciled with 15% sizing, the entire +142.9% concentrated in 2021 (+148.5%, larger than the total), negative in 4 of 7 years (including 2022 -28.6%), Sharpe 0.54 with CI straddling zero (-0.36 to +1.06), 37.6% max drawdown, and 32.8% of the headline in open mark-to-market.
