LINK 4H Keltner Channel Upper-Band Breakout with Trend Filter Long-Only (BINANCE USD-M Futures, 4H, OHLCV-Only, Vol-Adjusted Breakout Mechanism)
Outcome: Abandoned
LinkFourHourKeltnerUpperBreakoutTrendLong
Outcome Summary
This strategy applied a Keltner upper-band breakout with a trend filter to LINK 4H, filling a genuine portfolio gap on a new symbol and mechanism class. The implementation was correct and net-positive (206 trades, +20.7%), but the edge was razor-thin (PF 1.083, Sharpe 0.26 with a CI straddling zero), deployable only at small scale (17.6% impact, ~$3.2M capacity), and front-loaded into 2020/2023 with a decaying 2025/2026 tail. The analyst abandoned it before optimization, judging it the even-thinner arm of a mechanism whose stronger AVAX sibling had already failed every forward gate — so optimization would only fit the early-bull years and fail deflated Sharpe and the holdout the same way. It was recorded as the same marginal, capacity-constrained, decaying signature as several abandoned breakout siblings.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-only Keltner Channel upper-band breakout with a trend filter on LINKUSDT.BINANCE USD-M futures, 4H bars, pure OHLCV single feed. Enters LONG when price closes above the Keltner upper band (SMA20 + 2x ATR14) AND above the longer 50-bar SMA (trend filter). Manages the position with an ATR trailing stop (initialised at entry - 2x ATR, trailed by 3x ATR), a mid-band-loss exit (close below SMA20), and a 200-bar safety time stop. The signal is the continuous distance from the SMA in ATR units ((close-mid)/ATR) recomputed every bar; the breakout+trend condition is the entry gate. Sized at 18% equity notional, capped so initial-ATR-stop risk <= 1.5% of equity. leverage 1.0.

Implemented correctly and trades as specified: 206 Keltner upper-band breakout entries, 0 dropped, all long, exposure 24.4%; healthy sample, fills a genuine LINK 4H portfolio gap
Net-positive overall (+20.7%) with per-trade ~0.25% nominally above the futures cost floor
Razor-thin edge: profit_factor 1.083, Sharpe 0.26 (CI -1.05 to 1.31 straddles 0), win_rate 40%
Capacity-constrained: impact_cost_pct 17.6% with capacity only ~$3.2M — the edge is real only at small scale
Front-loaded and decaying: +20.7% carried by 2020 (+20.4%) and 2023 (+10.4%); 2021 -15.8%, 2025 -2.5%, 2026 -2.6%, rolling Sharpe to ~-4 by 2026; kurtosis 36 (outlier-dependent)
Thinnest arm of a mechanism whose stronger AVAX Keltner sibling (Sharpe 0.62, PF 1.17) already failed post-optimization on deflated Sharpe (0.14), a negative holdout, and is_overfitted
Outcome Summary
Vol-adjusted band breakouts (Keltner) do not generalize robustly to the thinner LINK/AVAX arms — they produce a marginal, capacity-constrained edge front-loaded into the early-bull years that would only optimize onto 2020/2023 and fail deflated Sharpe and the recent holdout, the same marginal-arm signature as the abandoned AVAX Keltner, DOT volume-breakout, and ADA midpoint-reclaim siblings.
The analyst abandoned it at backtest review as thin/decaying edge economics rather than a bug — the code traded exactly as specified, but a PF 1.08 / Sharpe 0.26 edge that only works at ~$3M scale and is concentrated in 2020/2023 isn't worth two hours of optimization, especially since the same Keltner mechanism's stronger AVAX arm had just failed post-optimization on deflated Sharpe 0.14, a negative holdout, and is_overfitted=True.
A long-only volatility-adjusted breakout on LINKUSDT 4H perpetual futures (pure OHLCV) using Keltner channels — buying when price closed above the SMA(20)+2×ATR upper band while also above a longer 50-SMA trend filter, managed by an ATR trailing stop, mid-band-loss exit, and time stop.
Over a 206-trade sample (~all long, none dropped, 24.4% exposure) the edge was razor-thin: profit factor 1.083, Sharpe 0.26 (CI -1.05 to 1.31), win rate 40%, +20.7% total at ~0.25%/trade, 20.3% max drawdown; it was capacity-constrained (impact cost 17.6%, capacity only ~$3.2M) and front-loaded into 2020 (+20.4%) and 2023 (+10.4%) with 2021 -15.8% and a decaying recent stretch (2025 -2.5%, 2026 -2.6%, rolling Sharpe ~-4 by 2026, kurtosis 36).
