ETH and SOL 4H Inside Bar Sequence Breakout Long Portfolio
Outcome: Abandoned
EthSolFourHourInsideBarSequenceBreakoutLongPortfolio
Outcome Summary
EthSolFourHourInsideBarSequenceBreakoutLongPortfolio applied the classic inside-bar compression-then-breakout pattern to a two-symbol ETH/SOL 4H portfolio, deliberately structured as a multi-bar sequence to avoid the single-bar no-information failure and routed only to verification-safe instruments. The build was clean — sane sizing, 89 trades, no bug — but it lost 26.8% with a profit factor of 0.70 and a 23.6% win rate, negative in 6 of 7 years, its only positive contribution a single +40.9% day in 2021. The 24% win rate with the rest of the book bleeding out was the signature of a false-breakout strategy whose compressions break and immediately fail. With no correctness fix to make and no edge for optimization to find, the analyst abandoned the strategy at the backtest-review gate, noting the long-only-breakout regime-decay the hypothesis itself had acknowledged applied here too.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-only multi-symbol inside-bar-sequence breakout portfolio on ETHUSDT and SOLUSDT BINANCE USD-M perpetual futures, 4H bars. For each symbol it counts the run of consecutive inside bars (high < prior high AND low > prior low) ending just before the current bar; when that run is >= min_inside_bars (2) and the current 4H close breaks above the highest high of the run, it enters long at 45% of equity notional. Each leg exits on a trailing stop (close below the min low of the prior 10 bars) or a 6% hard stop. At most one position per symbol (0/1/2 concurrent), gross <= ~90%, leverage 1.0, pure OHLCV. Three edge parameters: min_inside_bars, trailing_stop_lookback, hard_stop_pct.

Clean, correctly-built multi-symbol design (sane sizing, exposure 16%, no blow-up); novel inside-bar-sequence pattern with practitioner pedigree
Adequate trade count (89) — not a sparsity or data problem
Consistent money-loser: total_return -26.8%, Sharpe -0.56 (sharpe_ci_low -4.02), profit_factor 0.70, win_rate 23.6%, omega 0.75, Sortino -1.36, expectancy -$379/trade
Negative in 6 of 7 years (2022 -16%, 2024 -13%, 2025 -6%, 2026 -4%); only 2023 positive — edgeless across regimes
Entire positive contribution is one +40.9% day (2021-09-13); kurtosis 191, tail_ratio 0.34 — classic false-breakout bleed where compressions break and immediately fail
No correctness bug and healthy trade count, so the inside-bar-breakout mechanism itself has no edge on ETH/SOL 4H — the long-only-breakout regime-decay the hypothesis acknowledged applies here too
Outcome Summary
A pattern with decades of practitioner pedigree and a deliberately multi-bar design (to dodge the single-bar failure mode) still has no edge if the breakouts don't follow through — when compressions break and immediately fail, a 24% win rate carried by one outlier day cannot be optimized into a winner, and long-only breakouts remained regime-decayed on ETH/SOL 4H.
The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate before optimization because a negative-Sharpe, sub-1.0 profit-factor, 24%-win-rate signal has no gross edge to refine; with adequate trades and no correctness or sizing bug, the inside-bar-sequence breakout on ETH/SOL 4H simply does not follow through — a false-breakout bleeder dying by a thousand cuts, the same long-only-breakout regime-decay that killed the BTC/ADA/AVAX/LTC cohort.
A long-only, OHLCV-only two-symbol (ETHUSDT + SOLUSDT) 4H breakout portfolio on an inside-bar-sequence pattern — entering long when a symbol forms a run of at least 2 consecutive inside bars (volatility compression) and the current 4H close breaks above the high of that sequence, exiting on a 10-bar trailing stop or a 6% hard stop, with 3 free parameters.
The build was clean and correctly sized (16% exposure, no blow-up) over 89 trades, but it lost consistently: -26.8% total return (CAGR -7.0%), Sharpe -0.56 (CI low -4.02), profit factor 0.70, a 23.6% win rate, per-trade expectancy -$379, and negative annual returns in 6 of 7 years — with the entire positive contribution coming from a single +40.9% day in 2021 (kurtosis 191, tail ratio 0.34).
