LTC 4H Bullish Engulfing Pattern Pullback-Reversal Long-Only (BINANCE USD-M Futures, 4H, OHLCV-Only, 2-Bar Candle Pattern)
Outcome: Abandoned
LtcFourHourBullishEngulfingPullbackReversalLong
Outcome Summary
This strategy filled a genuine LTC coverage gap with a textbook bullish-engulfing pullback-reversal entry, screened for an uptrend and a recent decline. The implementation was correct (329 entries, none dropped, ~50/year), but the pattern had no edge: profit factor 0.80, Sharpe -1.16 with a CI essentially all negative, -19.0% total, and losses in 5 of 7 years. The analyst abandoned it before optimization, judging it another member of the repeatedly-failed discrete candlestick-reversal family — body geometry that reads well in trading lore but does not survive costs out-of-sample on majors, consistent with the abandoned ETH engulfing, BTC tweezer, and ETH climax siblings.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Long-only 4-HOUR bullish-engulfing pullback-reversal on LTCUSDT.BINANCE USD-M futures, pure OHLCV single feed. Detects a 2-bar bullish engulfing (prior red bar, current green bar whose body fully engulfs the prior body: open <= prior close and close >= prior open) confirmed by an uptrend (close > 50-bar SMA) and a recent decline into the pattern, then enters LONG. Exits at the structural engulfing-bar-low stop, a 1.5x ATR stop, a 2.5x ATR target, a 5% take-profit fallback, or a 20-bar time stop. The signal is the continuous body fraction (close-open)/range recomputed every bar; the engulfing+context condition is the discrete entry gate. Sized at 18% equity notional, capped so pattern-low-stop risk <= 1.5% of equity. leverage 1.0.

Implemented correctly and trades as specified: 329 bullish-engulfing entries, 0 dropped, all long; healthy sample (~50/yr); fills a genuine LTC coverage gap
No edge, net losing: profit_factor 0.802, Sharpe -1.16 (CI -2.41 to 0.02), total_return -19.0%, expectancy -$71/trade, omega 0.79, Sortino -1.79, PSR 0.037, win_rate 35%
Negative in 5 of 7 years (2020/2022/2023/2025/2026), rolling Sharpe -2 to -6 for long stretches, max_drawdown_duration ~2292 days
Known-failed pattern family: discrete 2-bar candlestick reversals (engulfing/tweezer/climax/harami) have repeatedly failed; the ETH daily bullish-engulfing sibling was abandoned at DSR 0.0009
Fee-fragile: commission 5.72% of gross on a no-edge signal
Outcome Summary
Discrete 2-bar candlestick reversal patterns (engulfing, tweezer, climax, harami) are documented in trading lore but do not survive out-of-sample on crypto majors — the body-containment geometry generates no fee-surviving continuation edge, so optimizing a net-losing base would only fit noise and fail the holdout.
The analyst abandoned it at backtest review as a confirmed hypothesis-level no-edge result rather than a bug — the code traded exactly as specified on a healthy sample, but the body-geometry signal has no continuation edge after costs (commission 5.72% of gross), and it belongs to a repeatedly-failed pattern family (the ETH daily bullish-engulfing sibling was already abandoned at DSR 0.0009, with BTC tweezer and ETH climax variants failing identically).
A long-only 2-bar candlestick-reversal strategy on LTCUSDT 4H perpetual futures (pure OHLCV), entering long on a bullish engulfing pattern (a green bar whose body fully engulfs the prior red bar's body) filtered for an uptrend context (close > 50-SMA) and a recent pullback, managed by a structural pattern-low stop, ATR stop/target, a percentage take-profit fallback, and a time stop.
Over a 329-trade sample (~50/year, all long, none dropped) it had no edge: profit factor 0.802, Sharpe -1.16 (CI -2.41 to 0.02), total return -19.0%, expectancy -$71/trade, Sortino -1.79, PSR 0.037, win rate 35%, with a max-drawdown duration of ~2292 days and negative returns in 5 of 7 years (rolling Sharpe -2 to -6 for long stretches).
