SOL Daily 30-Bar Low Breakdown Short with Volume Confirmation
Outcome: Abandoned
SolDailyThirtyBarLowBreakdownShortVolumeConfirmed
Outcome Summary
SolDailyThirtyBarLowBreakdownShortVolumeConfirmed was built to follow the analyst's explicit prescription — trade with momentum by shorting confirmed breakdowns of recent support rather than fading counter-rallies — and to fill SOL's short-side gap with a volume-confirmed 30-day-low breakdown. The code correctly implemented the mechanism, but the backtest was catastrophic: a 30% win rate, profit factor 0.28, Sharpe -1.76, a 62.8% drawdown, and -59% total, with gains confined to the 2022 bear. The analyst abandoned it before optimization as a structural premise failure — SOL is a high-beta uptrending asset whose support breaks get squeezed back outside sustained bears — noting that optimization could only curve-fit ATR stops to the handful of 2022 winners and would fail forward, as the sharply negative recent windows (2025 -44.7%) already show.
Hypothesis
Implements the SOL 30-bar-low breakdown short hypothesis as the mechanical mirror of the validated 30-bar-high long breakout, honoring the analyst's prescription to trade WITH short-term momentum (short on confirmed breakdown of recent support) rather than fading counter-rallies in a downtrend. calculate_signal returns a continuous breakdown score -- the close's distance below the prior 30-day low in ATR units -- so the signal varies every bar, while should_enter recomputes the binary conditions: close < prior 30-day low AND volume >= 1.5x the 50-day median. Exit geometry is asymmetric and favorable for a trend-continuation short: a wide ATR take-profit harvests SOL's documented sharp bear cascades while a tighter ATR stop and a reclaim exit cap losses on failed breakdowns. Routed to the BINANCE futures venue because the strategy is short-only (a CASH/spot account cannot short). DAILY bars target ~25-40 trades/year for adequate walk-forward sample. No supplementary, cross-asset, calendar, or counter-trend logic -- structurally distinct from the falsified session mechanisms.
Pre-optimization abandon: SOL daily 30-day-low breakdown SHORT is a catastrophic money-loser (profit_factor 0.28, Sharpe -1.76, win rate 30%, negative expectancy, 62.8% max DD, -59% total) with the Sharpe CI essentially entirely below 0. Every year is negative except the 2022 bear (+32.6%) and 2026. The premise fails structurally: SOL is a high-beta uptrending asset, so short breakdowns of 30-day support get squeezed/bought-back outside sustained bear regimes -- the edge exists only in 2022. Sparse (20 trades / 5.8yr). Code correctly implements the breakdown short and trades match it, so it's a premise failure, not a developer iterate; optimization would only curve-fit to the 2022 winners and fail walk-forward/holdout (2025 -44.7%). Not worth 2 hours.
Implementation
Short-only daily breakdown strategy on SOLUSDT.BINANCE (USD-M perp). Enters SHORT when the close breaks below the prior 30-day low AND today's volume is at least 1.5x the trailing 50-day median (volume confirmation). This is a trend-continuation momentum mechanism (breakdown of recent support), not a counter-rally fade. Exits use a tighter ATR stop (2.5x) on adverse upside, a wide ATR take-profit (5x) to let the bear cascade run, a 'reclaim' exit when price climbs back above the highest close of the prior 10 bars (failed breakdown), and a 20-bar max-hold time stop. Single-instrument, OHLCV-only, no supplementary data; positions sized at 50% of account equity.

Code correctly implements the volume-confirmed 30-day-low breakdown short (continuous breakdown-distance signal, no gated-to-0.0 anti-pattern); trades match the mechanism; fills a genuine short-side gap.
Catastrophic money-loser: Sharpe -1.76, profit_factor 0.28, win_rate 30%, negative expectancy (-$3,689/trade), max_drawdown 62.8%, total return -59.1%.
Sharpe CI essentially entirely negative (ci_high +0.149), probabilistic_sharpe 0.021; every year negative except the 2022 bear (+32.6%) and 2026 (+15.2%).
Premise fails structurally: SOL is a high-beta uptrending asset, so short 30-day-low breakdowns get squeezed (bought back) outside sustained bears — the edge exists only in 2022.
Sparse (20 trades over 5.8 years) and the recent windows are sharply negative (2025 -44.7%).
Outcome Summary
A short-only breakdown mechanism is hostage to the instrument's secular trend: on a high-beta uptrending asset, support breaks are bought back, so the edge appears only in isolated bear years and cannot survive walk-forward — instrument selection (not mechanism design) is the binding constraint for a directional short.
It was abandoned at the pre-optimization backtest-review gate (verdict: abandon) as a structural premise failure: SOL is a high-beta uptrending asset, so short 30-day-low breakdowns repeatedly get squeezed and bought back as V-bottoms, and the short-only edge materializes only in a sustained bear regime (2022) — a profit factor of 0.28 is a wrong directional bet, not a tunable miss.
A short-only, single-instrument SOLUSDT daily breakdown strategy — the mechanical mirror of a 30-bar-high long breakout — that shorted when the close broke below the prior 30-day low with volume confirmation (≥1.5× the 50-day median), using an ATR-based stop, a wide ATR take-profit, a reclaim exit, and a time stop, built to trade with short-term momentum per the analyst's prescription.
Over ~5.8 years it took just 20 short trades and was a catastrophic money-loser: a 30% win rate, profit factor 0.28 (gross losses ~3.6× gross wins), negative expectancy (-$3,689/trade), Sharpe -1.76 with an essentially all-negative CI (ci_high +0.149, probabilistic Sharpe 0.021), a 62.8% max drawdown, and a -59.1% total return. Every year was negative except the 2022 bear (+32.6%) and 2026 (+15.2%), with 2025 at -44.7%.
Backtest and paper results are hypothetical. Trading involves risk of loss.
