SOL Hyperliquid 4H Bidirectional Donchian Channel Breakout Long+Short (OHLCV-Only, 3-Parameter, Symmetric Risk)
Outcome: Abandoned
SolHyperliquidFourHourBidirectionalDonchianBreakoutLongShort
Outcome Summary
SolHyperliquidFourHourBidirectionalDonchianBreakoutLongShort transferred a validated long-only BTC Donchian breakout to a symmetric long+short on Hyperliquid SOL, deliberately filter-free to maximize trade count and fill the venue and direction quotas simultaneously. The signal fired plenty (141 trades over 2.3 years), but it was a consistent loser — profit factor 0.96, Sharpe -0.14, expectancy -$73/trade, a 44% drawdown, and a 20-loss streak — with both the long and short legs net-negative from breakout whipsaws on a choppy alt. The very additions that defined the hypothesis (the short side, the volatile alt, no filter) were what destroyed the edge, making it a mechanism mismatch rather than a tunable-parameter gap. The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate, noting that optimizing from negative expectancy would only reproduce the breakout-family-on-alt forward-failure pattern.
Hypothesis
Implementation
Bidirectional Donchian-channel breakout trend-initiation on SOLUSD.HYPERLIQUID perpetual futures, 4H bars, OHLCV-only. Enters long when the close breaks above the prior 20-bar high and short when it breaks below the prior 20-bar low. A single symmetric ATR(14) trailing stop governs both sides: longs track the running peak high and exit on a 3*ATR reversal below it, shorts track the running trough low and exit on a 3*ATR reversal above it. No trend/volume/regime filter. Capital-relative sizing (50% notional per position), leverage 1.0. Three tunable parameters: donchian_period, atr_stop_mult, position_pct.

Healthy trade count (141 over 2.3 years) — not trade-starved; the signal fires plenty
Clean OHLCV-only single-instrument design; entry diagnostics show no sizing/min-notional drops
Hits two portfolio gaps (HYPERLIQUID venue + long-short direction)
Net-losing with NO edge: profit_factor 0.96 (<1), Sharpe -0.14, expectancy -$73/trade, total_return -8.96% over a healthy sample — not a fluke
Catastrophic risk: max_drawdown 44%, 20 consecutive losses, 2026 -29.4%, max_drawdown_duration 448 days; sharpe_ci_low -2.32, PSR 0.44
Both sides bleed: long_win_rate 0.32, short_win_rate 0.44 — unfiltered breakouts whipsaw on a choppy alt in both directions
Mechanism mismatch vs the validated sibling: BtcFourHourDonchianTrendBreakoutLong is long-only on BTC; adding the short side + switching to a volatile alt with no filter destroyed the edge
Outcome Summary
Transferring a proven long-only trend-breakout mechanism to a bidirectional, unfiltered long+short on a more volatile alt produces net-negative expectancy from two-sided false breakouts — the only fixes that would help (a directional bias or a filter) contradict the hypothesis's own quota-driven premise, so it is not optimization-rescuable.
The analyst abandoned it at the backtest-review gate before optimization because a sub-1.0 profit-factor, negative-Sharpe strategy over a healthy (non-starved) sample has no positive edge to surface — a best-of-N sweep from negative expectancy would only curve-fit a forward-failing config — and the failure was a fundamental mechanism mismatch: the validated sibling was long-only on BTC, while the defining additions here (a symmetric short side, a choppy alt, and zero filters) are exactly what whipsaws.
A bidirectional, OHLCV-only Donchian channel breakout on SOLUSD.HYPERLIQUID 4H perpetual — applied symmetrically: go long when price breaks the prior 20-bar high, go short when it breaks the 20-bar low, with a single ATR-multiple trailing stop governing both sides and deliberately no trend, volume, or regime filter, using just 3 parameters to fill the under-represented Hyperliquid-venue and long/short quotas at once.
Over a healthy 141-trade, ~2.3-year sample (2024-2026) the strategy was net-losing with no edge: -8.96% total return (CAGR -4.6%), profit factor 0.96, Sharpe -0.14 (CI low -2.32), per-trade expectancy -$73, a 37.6% win rate, a 44% max drawdown, and a 20-trade losing streak — with both legs bleeding (long win rate 0.32, short win rate 0.44).
Backtest and paper results are hypothetical. Trading involves risk of loss.
