Hyperliquid Volatility-Feedback Transitions on XLM, ETC, TRX and XMR

Outcome: Abandoned

HyperliquidVolatilityFeedbackTransitions

Outcome Summary

After one iteration, the strategy tested asymmetric volatility transitions across four Hyperliquid perpetuals. The supplied backtest lost 14.05% with a Sharpe of -2.45 across 97 closed positions. The abandonment review cited a different 78-trade sample and found losses across all instruments and both directions, with no supported repair. The strategy was abandoned before optimization or later reviews.

Hypothesis

Original research hypothesis: test asymmetric volatility-feedback episodes independently on four Hyperliquid perpetuals using synchronized 4-HOUR bars. Short when a multi-day volatility expansion accompanies falling prices; buy only when volatility contracts after a previously elevated-volatility state and prices have begun recovering. The proposed mechanism is delayed risk-budget selling during expansion and gradual risk re-entry during normalization, not a claim that an isolated crash candle must reverse. Market orders execute at the completed signal bar close, the capability-registry equivalent of next-bar-open execution on a continuous venue. Protective stops trigger intrabar in the platform; no exchange-hosted protection, hedge mode, atomic basket fills or selectable same-bar policy is required. Use all available joint history, reporting each instrument and directional arm separately. All capture figures and event rates below are untested predictions.

HYPERLIQUID is 13.5% versus a 20% target; long-only is 75.5% versus a 55% ceiling. This multi-instrument long-short experiment addresses both imbalances without another Binance major or continuously rebalanced ranked panel. Options are further below their target, but recent option-leg feasibility failures favor a supported linear-instrument experiment here. The supplied concentration map is empty; snapshot primary-instrument counts are XLM 6, ETC 5, TRX 3 and XMR 3, so these are relatively little-used names, not demonstrated sub-15% recent shares. Snapshot searches found semivariance rotation, generic volatility-managed exposure and XMR/TRX candle reversals; this proposal instead uses asymmetric volatility-state crossings, a prior elevated-state requirement for longs, and a fixed episode clock. It does not reuse the failed CUSUM drift detector or swing-sweep rules.

Measured negative expectancy: -1.605% mean net trade return versus the Hyperliquid 0.15% fee-aware floor, profit factor 0.453 and portfolio return -11.290%. Losses span all four instruments and both directional arms, with no specific supported repair evident.

Implementation

Four independent Hyperliquid 4H volatility-feedback episodes. Short fresh volatility-expansion crossings with negative fast-window returns; buy fresh contraction crossings with positive returns after a prior elevated state. Market orders fill at the completed signal close, the registry equivalent of next-open execution on a continuous venue. Fixed 6% platform intrabar stops are placed on fills; positions expire after 18 completed instrument bars, followed by a 12-bar cooldown.

Implements disjoint fast/slow sample-volatility windows, preceding-observation elevated-state memory, frozen entry quantity, and equity-relative volatility sizing capped at 10% per leg and 40% gross. All four legs share one mark-to-market venue account; conservative additive daily shocks and instrument maintenance margins enforce eight-move modeled liquidation headroom before new exposure. Entries require synchronized timestamps; independent raw-bar time exits and existing protective stops survive a stalled alignment barrier. This is a fixed named research panel using joint history, not a ranked universe or hedge. Per-leg and directional diagnostics, listing dates, clustered inference and the return-sign-only comparison are analysis/reporting tasks; this strategy does not trade that diagnostic alternative. Slippage is declared for the platform to charge, without re-modeling costs.

Code appears consistent with the stated volatility crossings and sizing rules. All four instruments and both directions trade; 62 of 78 positions last the specified 72 hours.

Across 78 closed trades and 65 entry dates, mean net trade return is -1.605%, profit factor is 0.453 and portfolio return is -11.290%. Every instrument and both directional arms lose.

Ledger PnL of -$11,289.37 reconciles with the portfolio loss. Price PnL is already -$11,093.86, with net funding adding -$195.52; funding costs alone do not explain the failure.

Outcome Summary

The review found price PnL was already negative, so funding costs alone did not explain the failure.

The backtest-review verdict was abandon because expectancy was negative and below the 0.15% fee-aware floor, with no supported repair identified. Optimization and subsequent analyst and risk reviews were not reached.

Trade XLM, ETC, TRX and XMR Hyperliquid perpetuals by shorting volatility expansion with falling prices and buying volatility contraction as prices recover.

The supplied backtest returned -14.05% with a Sharpe of -2.45 across 97 closed positions and a 14.25% maximum drawdown. The abandonment review cited a different 78-trade sample returning -11.290%, with a 0.453 profit factor and losses across every instrument and both directions.

Backtest and paper results are hypothetical. Trading involves risk of loss.
